Keokuk County — A hands-on wine grape production and winemaking class, hosted by the Keokuk County Extension Office in collaboration with Iowa State University specialists Dr. Aude Watrelot, Dr. Suzanne Slack, and Dr. Randall Vos, continues to bring valuable knowledge to local growers and aspiring winemakers.
So far, the workshop series has covered essential topics such as Vineyard Establishment, Cultivar Selection, Training Systems, Pruning, Fertilization Treatments, Pest and Disease Control, and Canopy Management. Sessions have already taken place at 3 Sons Winery and Tassel Ridge Winery, giving participants the opportunity to engage directly in vineyard settings.
The next phase of the series will focus on Harvesting, Grape Maturity, Varietal Differences, and Winemaking Techniques. Participants will explore the science behind harvest timing, learn about different grape varieties suited to Iowa’s climate, and gain practical insights into fermentation, bottling, and wine storage.
Upcoming workshops will be held at Fireside Winery and Wooden Wheel Winery, offering even more opportunities for hands-on learning and expert guidance.
“This is a unique collaboration between local wineries and university specialists,” said Emily Belvel of the Keokuk County Extension Office. “We’re excited to help participants deepen their understanding of both viticulture and winemaking through real-world experience and scientific expertise.”
Whether you’re a backyard grower or a beginning winemaker, this workshop series offers the tools and support to elevate your grape-growing and winemaking journey.
