Schantz-Mitchell Post #593 of Crawfordsville has selected Cory Westphal to attend American Legion Boys State, June 12-18 at Camp Dodge. Westphal is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Bryan Westphal of Wayland. Cory attends WACO High School and participates in baseball, basketball, and football. After graduation, he plans to attend Southeastern Community College for two years and then transfer to a university where he plans to major in Mechanical engineering.
Ryan D. Chupp, son of Ruben and Idella Chupp of Wayland, is taking the microphone at WGCS-FM after completing Goshen (Ind.) College’s Introduction to Radio course. Sixteen students interested in radio took the communication department class, taught by Assistant Professor of Communication and WGCS General Manager Jon Kauffman-Kennel. Throughout the fall semester, students learned to operate a variety of equipment, including digital audio systems, as well as basic announcing techniques and broadcast history and regulations. Chupp, a 1997 graduate of Iowa Mennonite School, is now part of WGCS’s staff of student and volunteer announcing staff. WGCS, 91.1 FM, is a listener-supported public radio station broadcasting since 1958 from the Goshen College campus.
Robert and Mildred Freyenberger, Wayland, and June Freyenberger, Iowa City, were weekend houseguests the past weekend in the Ron Freyenberger home, Middlebury, Indiana. They went especially to attend the Northridge High School commencement activities as Lucas Freyenberger, grandson of Robert and Mildred was among the graduates. The Iowans flew to South Bend, Indiana.
Rev. and Mrs. Ralph Draper, Wayland, attended the graduation of their grandson, Tim Draper, from Boone, Iowa High School Sunday afternoon, May 30. Also attending the graduation were Steve and Laura Draper, Anna, Stephen, and Benjamin of Taylor, Michigan. The Michigan people visited in the home of their parents the Darpers and Laverne Blossers, Wayland.
Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Gibson purchased the Verda Reschly property in East Railroad Street, Wayland, at public auction Friday. The real estate was sold in connection with the household goods sale of Mrs. Reschly, who has moved to Parkview Home.

The Wayland Lions Club held their May meeting in Tuesday, May 22, at the Wayland Community Center. President Jay Meyer called the meeting to order and led the Pledge of Allegiance. Royce Roth offered the Invocation. Alice Hofstetler catered a delicious meal that was enjoyed by 12 members and two guests. Treasurer Report and Secretary Minutes were given by Terry Kaufman and Carol Shumaker, respectively, and approved. Membership chairman Brian Pattyson announced the final approved plans for the Oct. 14 Sponsor/new member meeting. Past International Director Dave Stoufer and former LCIF coordinator, Rachel Nicola will be the featured speakers for the October meeting. New officers starting with the July meeting will be as follows: Marianne Pattyson, president; Randy Fehr, first vice president; Royce Roth, second vice president; Tim Egli, third vice president; Terry Kaufman, treasurer; Gail Simmering, secretary.
Recognition for outstanding academic achievement has been given to the following Grand View University students for the 2012 spring semester. The students are named to the dean’s list for earning a grade-point average of 3.5 or better on a 4/0 scale while carrying at least 12 hours of classes. From Wayland on the dean’s list is Mariah Jepson.
The WACO softball team won over Louisa-Muscatine, 11-1, getting their first victory of the season by a decisive margin. Warrior pitcher Sara Conwell kept the Falcons at bay with 13 strikeouts in six innings. She picked up the win on the mound, giving up just three hits, two walks and one run. For the night, Leah McElhinney led the Warriors at the plate, going 3-for-4 with an RBI. Morgan Dugger and Conwell were each 2-for-3 with two walks, while rosemary Skriver was 2-for-4. Conwell had a double and an RBI. Other WACO hits came from Jaclyn Unternahrer and Hannah Black. Cierra McArtor had an RBI and she also stole three bases. Unternahrer had two steals.
