1998
•Eighty-six feet of chain link fencing has been placed on the north edge of Central Park in Wayland.
•The WACO school board approved the installation of new lights for the football field. Finding for the $24,000 project will come from the activity fund.
•Lisa Mineart, bride-elect of Gary Clark, was honored at a prenuptial courtesy Sunday afternoon, May 17, 1998, at the Wayland Mennonite Church Fellowship Hall.
•Alphabet Soup Daycare/preschool will be moving in the fall of 1998. They have one preschool and two full-time day care openings. Program directors will be Shelli Brose and Denise Baldosier.
•Craig Nebel graduated in May, 1998 from the two-year Business Program of Hesston College, Hesston, KS. He will attend Eastern Mennonite University this coming school year.
2003
•Brett and Laurie Miles announce the birth of Elizabeth (Ellie) Grace, born April 24 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City. She has one big sister, Katie.
•Rachel Harnagel of Washington and Jay Meyer of Wayland announce their engagement and upcoming wedding. They will exchange wedding vows on July 26, 2003.
•Abbe Gugel, daughter of Larry and Kathy Gugel of Wayland, and Michael Kaufman, son of Mike and Donna Kaufman of Wayland, were united in marriage at Sugar Creek Mennonite Church of Wayland on May 17, 2003.
•Richard “Dick” Leon Widmer, 70, died unexpectedly Friday, June 6, 2003 at his home in Wayland.
•Agri-Way Partners LLC in Wayland held an open house on June 6. Over 200 people are estimated to have attended.
2008
•Lucille Miller, Wayland, will turn 100 years old on Thursday, June 5, 2008.
•Bob Donkersloot has chaperoned 33 of the 34 WACO proms he has attended. Hired in 1974, he has taught art, speech and drama in the school district ever since. This spring Mr. Donkersloot retired from teaching. He was honored with a community prom on June 20.
•The descendants of John and Minnie Mann held a reunion on Saturday, June 7. Hosting were Joyce (and Rodney) Letts and Janice (and Jerry) Flory, descendants of Rhua (Mann) Davison.
•College graduates were Scott Upton graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from William Penn University. Jill Meyer received her Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science from Buena Vista University.
•WACO’s shuttle hurdle team of Doug McIntyre, Tad Morrow, Chayse Roth, and Austin McBeth broke their own state record, set in the Thursday prelims, on their way to winning the event in the Class 1A state track meet. Their time was 58.15. McBeth also won the 110 hurdles in 14.68.
2013
•Stan and Karole Miller celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. They were married at Sugar Creek Mennonite Church on June 16, 1963.
•William “Bill” F. Freyenberger, 98, passed away Tuesday, June 4, 2013. A celebration of life was held Sunday, June 9.
•Betty Messer of Wayland celebrated her 90th birthday on Sunday, June 30, 2013.
•Evelyn P. Vinton, 85, of Wayland, formerly of Coppock, died Monday, May 20, 2013 at the Parkview Home in Wayland.
•Graduating from Southeastern Community College from Wayland were Kashia Drake, Nursing Diploma; Kole Hudson, Welding Diploma; Ashley Shuman, Nursing Diploma
