1998
•Streets in Wayland are being cleared of storm damage. Power was out from Monday afternoon until Tuesday evening. The Keith Morris family lost their mobile home due to high winds.
•The Southeast Iowa Blood Center drew 34 units of life saving blood on July 1 in Wayland. New donors were Mike Todd roth and Mary K. Diers. Steve Jay Miller attained the one gallon plateau.
•Wayland fire Department had a busy June. On June 30 they were called to the Daiel Wenger home to a fire which was caused by a generator being improperly connected. Also that day they were called to the Harold Kauffman apartment where Mrs. Kauffman had fallen.
•Connie Klett and Ledru Freyenberger repeated their wedding vows at the Sugar Creek Mennonite Church on June 5. Parents of the couple are Frieda Freyenberger, Wayland, and John and Carol Knupp, Stronghurst, Illinois.
•Bradley and Jill Crile of Wayland are the parents of a baby boy, Kallin James, born June 25. He weighed ten pounds, nine ounces and had one brother Josiah, and two sisters, Shaylee and Raeanna.
2003
•Robert H. Diers and wife Mary Kay were the Grand Marshals of the Wayland Fourth of July parade.
•The WACO Board of Education recognized Mr. Emil Schlatter for 33 years of service to students.
•Orval and Alberta Miller of Wayland will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary with a family gathering on July 13. Orval Miller and Alberta Boese were married July 11, 1943 at the home of the bride’s parents, Albert and Anna Boese.
•Helen and J. glen Widmer of Wayland celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with family July 5 and 6. Helen Yoder and J. Glen Widmer were united in marriage on June 6, 1943, at the home of the groom’s parents near Wayland.
•Robert and Vickie Achen would like to announce the engagement of their daughter, Stephanie Marie, to Joshua Ryan, son of Sheldon and Lori Miller of Wayland. An August 30 wedding will take place at Sugar Creek Mennonite Church.
2008
•The Wayland Eicher Youth Group recently returned from a trip to Atlanta, Georgia where they worked with DOOR Ministries.
•Janelle Eubanks and Donnie Escher are pleased to announce their engagement and upcoming wedding. Janelle is the daughter of Jim and Joan Eubannks of rural Wayland. Donnie is the son of Warren and Mary Escher of rural Washington.
•Audrey (Mrs. Dean) Kauffman served as Grand Marshal of the Wayland Fourth of July parade. She and her husband Dean had a grocery store in Wayland for years.
•Roger Wyse had a visit from his niece, Joyce Swartzendruber from Oromo, Maine.
•Louise Kauffman had a surprise visit from Susie Gilmore and Helen Beckley from Washington. Susie used to babysit for Louise when her children were small when they lived in Washington. Louise’s daughter, Janice and Chris Widmer, Kansas City, also visited.
2013
•George Brooks was the Honorary Grand Marshal in Memoriam of the Wayland Fourth of July parade. He was represented by his descendants.
•A group of 42 volunteers descended upon the Parkview Home apartment complex and in two days and four nights stripped and reshingled the roof.
•On July 7, 2013, the Henry County Sheriff’s office received a report of a vehicle in a ditch. Robert Stutzman, of Wayland, attempted to turn around and accidentally allowed the rear tires of the vehicle to go into the ditch. The vehicle was removed with no damage.
•WACO softball team beat Winfield-Mt. Union 10-1 on their home field, defeating W-MU for the third time this year and earning a spot in the regional semifinals.
•The 91st annual John a. Rees reunion was held Saturday, June 15 at Marr Park.
