100 years ago — March 1, 1923
Emil Borgstrand has moved to the Shively farm, and he will sure be a busy man this year.
A.D. Blosser and family now occupy the J.J. Johnson farm near the Sugar Creek Church, which was purchased last fall.
C.C. Wenger, J.E. Stuckey, Melvin Roth, and Jacob Wenger attended the District Bankers Convention held at Burlington on Washington’s Birthday.
S.H. Van Syoc has moved to a farm near Winfield. Mr. Van Syoc and his family were residents of this community some years ago, so it’s like getting back home for them.
Misses Ermina Troutman, Ethel Taylor, Myrtle Zehr, and Mildred Allen spent the weekend at home. Miss Troutman was taken sick Sunday evening with a severe attack of flu na dcould not return to her school work. She is still quite sick and unable to leave her bed.
70 years ago — March 5, 1953
Virgil Blosser, publisher of the Wayland News for the past seven and a half years, has sold the paper to Clarke Miller of Washington. Mr. Miller took possession this week. The Blosser family is moving to a farm they recently purchased. Mr. Blosser will continue his church work at Gladwin, near Columbus Junction.
The Red Brick Rhythm Band, under the leadership of Mrs. C.M. Benson, will present a full evening of entertainment in the Wayland High School gym on Friday. The public is invited to the program which is being sponsored by the Progress Club.
50 years ago — Feb. 22, 1973
Norman Leichty, son of Rev. and Mrs. Willard Leichty, Wayland, and Kathy Achen of Crawfordsville are among 1105 students at the University of Iowa, named to the College of Liberal Arts dean’s list for the first semester of the 1972-1973 academic year.
Wayland Study Club met Monday evening, with Miss Freida Reininger. Roll call was answered with a pet peeve. Mrs. Laurence Henss presented the program, “Miracle of your Memory.” A social evening was then spent with refreshments served by the hostess in keeping with the season.
Golden Rule Sunday school class met at the home of Mrs. Henry Leichty Monday for an all-day meeting. The day was spent quilting comforters and piecing quilt blocks. A covered dish dinner was enjoyed by 10 members. Mrs. Leichty and Mrs. Elmer Roth had the devotional period.
Mr. and Mrs. John Stauffer of Wayland announce the engagement of their daughter, Jane Marie, to Gary Snyder, grandson of Mrs. Gerald McClaine of Pella. Miss Stauffer is a 1971 graduate of WACO Community High School and is presently attending Central College.
30 years ago — March 10, 1993
Mike and Helen Meth of Mount Union became the parents of twin daughters Feb. 25. Born at the University Hospitals, Natalie Mae weighed two pounds, 10 ounces and Natasha Anne weighed two pounds, eight ounces. They have two older children, son Carey, six, and daughter Hannah, four. Orlin and Esther Leichty of rural Wayland, and Robert L. and Mae Mein are the twins’ grandparents. Lavina Leichty of Wayland and Robert L. Meth of Mount Pleasant are great-grandparents.
Those from the Wayland-Olds area who were guests in Katie Shetler’s home Friday in Kalona were Edna Roth, Edith Boese, Susan Troyer, Inez Roth, Gladys Widmer, and Frieda Freyenberger.
Harold and Marcia Steele, who celebrated their golden wedding anniversary Feb. 25 were honored that evening at a family dinner at The Haven in New London. Joining the honorees were their two sons and their families, Doug and Carolyn Steele, Carrie and Cory; Brian and Ada Steele, Heidi and Derek, all of Crawfordsville. Granddaughter Carmen Steele, now of Des Moines, was unable to attend the anniversary celebration. She is the oldest daughter of the Doug Steeles.
PVT. First Class Chad Kirby completed his basic training Feb. 25 at San Diego MCRD. His mother, Vicki Nebel, attended the graduation exercises. They returned to Wayland where Kirby is spending his week’s leave. Next he reports to Camp Pendleton for a three-month training session in infantry.
Verda Reschly returned home Feb. 25 from Escondido, California, where she had spent two weeks in the home of her children, the Ed Reschlys and the Ken Millers. They toured the Mormon Temple with is being constructed in San Diego.
