100 years ago — March, 1923
Mrs. Sam Wenger and daughter, Lenore, went to Peoria Saturday, where they spent Sunday with husband and father, who is taking a course of treatments for rheumatism at a sanitarium in that city.
Henry Miller and family have moved to the Sam Bergh property near the Schlatter Garage. Mr. Miller is working at the plumbers trade for Mr. Bergh.
Mr. Morris of Stockport has been secured as shipper for the Wayland Shipping Association. He may move his family here later.
Elmer Meyer and John Roth, of Parsons College, spent the weekend with home folks.
50 years ago — March, 1973
Mr. and Mrs. Jake R. Roth returned home Wednesday, after spending a week in the home of their daughter, the Earl Roth family in Milford, Nebraska.
Mr. and Mrs. Larry Neff and family of Lockridge were Friday evening visitors in the Ann Neff home.
Mrs. Margaret Reschly had as dinner guests, Mr. and Mrs. Howard Sheaffer and family of Milton, Mr. and Mrs. LaVerne Messer and family of Packwood. Mrs. Ann Neff was an afternoon visitor.
Mrs. Marie Berkshire of Burlington spent the weekend at the home of her sister, Mrs. Edith Hileman. On Sunday, Mrs. Berkshire and Mrs. Hileman were dinner guests in the home of their sister, Mrs. Allen Meyer and Mr. Meyer.
Mr. and Mrs. Ferdinand Kappas of Henderson, Utah, spent Wednesday through Friday in the home of Mr. Kappas’ sister, Mrs. Mary Haberman. Ed Haberman of Tama, also spent Friday in the home of his mother.
S-Sgt. Fred Ktigers, was promoted to Sgt. 1st Class Feb. 15, 1973, and his commanding officer, Capt. Harding, was assisted by Mrs. Stigers in pinning the stripes on her husband. The Stigers are stationed in Vicenza, Italy, on a three-year tour. Sgt. 1st Class Stigers is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred A. Stigers of Wayland.
Mr. and Mrs. Espey Schroll will observe their 50th wedding anniversary April 1. Espey Schroll and Bernice Miller were married April 1, 1923, at the home of the bride’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. P.R. Miller, Wayland. Their children are Mrs. LaVerne (Elizabeth) Graber of Wayland; Mrs. Harold (Evelyn) Troyer of Blue Grass; and Mrs. Gary (Kathryn) La Bounty of Silver Spring, Maryland. They have 16 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
25 years ago — March 1998
Emerson Max Roth was born March 17, 1998, the son of Gordon and Tami Roth of Des Moines. Emerson weighed seven pounds, five ounces at birth and was 20 inches long. Grandparents are Max and Berniece Roth, Wayland. Mabel Roth, Wayland, is great-grandmother.
Steve and Denise Mikkelsen, Eldridge, Iowa became the parents of Mikaela Jean Mikkelsen on March 18, 1998. Mikaela weighed seven pounds, one ounce at birth and was 20 inches long. She is welcomed home by sister Abby and brother Dane. Grandparents are Donnie and Jean Hertig, Wayland; Pat and Virginia Miculinich, Fairbank; and Larry and Rose Mikkelsen, Waterloo.
Stacy Mast, Wayland, was named to the roster of the Wayland Fire Department at their regular March meeting. This brings the roster to 25 men.
Air Force Airman Matthew J Heisner has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. During the six weeks of training the airman studied the Air Force mission, organization, and customs and received special training in human relations. In addition, airmen who complete basic training earn credits toward an associate degree through the Community College of the Air Force. Heisner is the son of Donna J. Heisner of Wayland, and a brother of Teresa A. Anderson of Washington.
