1970 … 52 years ago
The following is from the March 12, 1970 Clarion, written by Helen Adam.
We in Richland community like to think of ourselves as thriving and progressive people, in an age when “small” enterprise of any kind seems to be on the way out.
We’re with the “in” crowd this winter with our fascination for, and purchase of snowmobiles. Raymond Hadley, local dealer, reports there is much interest in sales of the new fun machines.
One of the newest improvements in Richland during 1969, and a source of great pride to the parishioners of Saint Frances Xavier Cabrini Church, is their new parish center. The parish was a kind of community project, in that general contracting work was under the direction of a local firm, Leonard Andeway Construction. Mechanical contracting, including plumbing, heating, air conditioning, and wiring was done by Dale Sasseen.
Clair E. Klingman, area manager for the Iowa Telephone Co., moved into a new office in September 1969. This office replaces the one at Hedrick and is much more convenient, as well as being centrally located. Leroy Sheetz is foreman of the construction crew, Vernon Willhite is the local installer — repairman, and Russell Whitaker is in charge of office maintenance. Fourteen towns and over 6,000 customers are served from the office.
Dale Sasseen has purchased and is remodeling the former Goodrich property located on Highway 77. The home, previously occupied by Clarence Phillips family, will now consist of two apartments.
Greeson Insurance Agency moved from an office in the rear of their building on the square, into a newly remodeled and paneled office area at the front.
The Richland Stockyards were established by Walter Nordyke at Rubio and Richland in 1903. Shipping was done by railroad until 1932 when the first truck was purchased and his son, Aaron W. Nordyke, assisted him in the business. Aaron took over in 1947 and operated it until last Fall when he sold to Rath Packing Co. of Waterloo.
Dr. Paul Lynch, D.V.M., has had Dr. Gene Hoy, D.V.M. associated with him since last June in the practice of veterinary medicine.
