Over 65 people crowded into the Richland council chambers Tuesday night to protest the planned auction of the school house and lot in Richland. Jim Hadley, president of the Richland Betterment Council, acted as spokesmen to explain to the council the people were interested in seeing the school ground made available to the group for a senior citizens housing site.
The Packwood Community Library is having a Back to School Story Hour in Saturday morning from 9:30-10:30 a.m. at the Community Building. All youngsters from the ages of 3-7 are welcome to attend.
Incumbents Tom Hoskins and John Adam were both reelected Tuesday in the Pekin school board elections.
Twenty members were present at the Richland Commercial Club meeting for Sept. held Thursday evening at Peppermint Island. Discussion centered around the Homecoming event to be held next summer, sponsored by the Club.
Officials of several agencies met Tuesday night in Richland to discuss the charge by Scheesley Construction that the town of Richland owes him over $400,000 more for his work on the sere construction.
An apparent tornado touched down on the Ed Bower farm northwest of Ollie about 10:30 p.m. Saturday, causing extensive damage. Mr. and Mrs. Bower and their four children were all home at the time of the storm.
Around 50 interested citizens met Thursday evening at the Lions Building to discuss the building of low rent apartments for senior citizens on the school ground. The town council has given the Betterment Committee until Oct. 2 to show a genuine interest in the project by raising $7500.
The auction of surplus school equipment and materials from the Pekin Community School District will be held at the Ollie school grounds on Sept. 30.

The first service project by the Packwood Lions Club has met with super support. The club is sponsoring a blood drive for the Southeast Iowa Blood Blank this Thursday, Oct. 5.
The Richland Lions Building was full to capacity Thursday evening, when the club members held a Ladies Night event to mark the 20th anniversary of the club.
A new business opened in Richland last week, with the closing of another. Larry and Peggy Egbert closed the Fun House recreation center. The new business is T&L Trophies, with Larry Egbert forming a partnership with Tony Stephens.
The Packwood Grocery Store has been sold to Carl Padget of Hedrick. Eve and Pat Whitten, along with their daughter Cheryl Newman, have operated the store since Aug. 20, 1972.
The town of Richland has proclaimed Fri., Oct. 27 as Jodevin Day. The day will feature the premier showing of Cinderella Trotter, a film about the story of Jodevin.
At a Richland City Council meeting Monday, the council made motions to reject both the $7500 bid from the Richland Betterment Council and the $15,000 bid from Kermit Hinshaw and Ted Spray. The council then moved to sell the school building and the lot it sits on at auction on Oct. 28.
The Packwood city council met in special session Monday evening to discuss a sewer extension project on the northwest corner of town. Bill Williams had previously asked the council to pay for the extension of about 1400 feet to service a possible 13 houses and the 16 senior citizen apartments.
The Packwood Lions Club met Thursday night and discussed plans for the Charter Night Banquet. The banquet will be held on Sat., Dec. 2 at the Pekin High School.

A total of 796 people toured the Richland Jaycees Haunted House during four nights of operation last week. This was a small increase over last year.
The Richland school building and lot were sold Saturday to Everett Baker of Richland. His high bid of $15,500 will either be officially accepted or rejected at a public hearing held by the Richland City Council.
Open house was held at the Pekin Elementary/Middle School building Sunday, with about 650 people taking the opportunity to tour the new facilities.
An arts and crafts show is underway for the month of Nov. in the Packwood Library. A large number of items are now on display and more crafts are welcome.
The Richland Lions will be serving their annual whole hog sausage and pancake supper this Thursday, Nov. 16. Serving will begin at 5 p.m.
Two public hearings were held Monday evening by the Richland City Council, at which time they accepted the offer of $15,500 from Everett Baker and the offer of $7500 from the Richland Betterment Council for the south school lots.
The Richland Lions held their annual pancake and whole hog sausage supper Thursday evening with a good turn out despite several conflicts of other events on the same evening.
Bids from six contractors were opened and read on Thursday, Nov. 23 for the apartment project being planed by the Ollie Community Retirement Corporation. The low bidder was Leonard Andeway of Richland.
Mary Joan Wilhite, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Wilhite of Richland, has been chosen by the faculty of the Pekin Community High School to receive the DAR Good Citizenship award.
A soup supper is being planned by the Ollie Community Betterment Committee to help raise funds for the group to further projects in the Ollie community.

The Packwood Lions Club had the distinction Saturday evening of having the largest list of charter members ever to join a Lions Club in the state of Iowa. There were 83 charter members named Saturday evening.
The Packwood City Council voted unanimously Saturday to allow two men to begin demolition of the school building in Packwood. Rex Kimple and Michael Bresch will be doing the work.
The Pekin school board ratified the collective bargaining agreement which had earlier been accepted by the teachers in the Pekin Education Association. The agreement allows for a base salary for a beginning instructor at $10,200.
Santa Claus will arrive at the Ollie fire station this Saturday, Dec. 16 to meet all the children of the Ollie area. He will arrive on the firetruck and will be handing out treats to all the children.
The Richland Commercial Club sponsored an hour of movies for about 90 children from the Richland Community on Saturday, Dec. 16 Shortly after 3 p.m., the children were led to the city park and Santa Claus soon appeared on the back of a pick up.
Kids young and old will want to take note of the fact the Give the World a Smile puppet company will be coming to Richland soon. The company will be featured in a night of entertainment at the Lions Building in Richland Dec. 27.
A party for children in the Packwood Community brought over 70 kids to the Community Building on Saturday. The party was sponsored by the Packwood Lions Club and Packwood merchants, with candy and prizes being given.
A total of 80 pints of blood were donated during Wednesday and Thursday of last week, when the Southeast Iowa Blood Bank visited in Richland.
