MAY
For the second year in a row, Pekin’s Steve Greiner won the Drake Relays one-mile run. In what has been called the biggest track and field meet in the country, Steve defended his mile crown with a 25-yard victory over Jim Zinnel of Algona, the same one he defeated last year by .001 of a second. Steve’s winning time was 4.44.5.
John Adams was elected president of the Richland Lions Club at their annual youth guest night.
Saturday, May 5, was Great Iowa Cleanup and was headed up by area chairman, Shirley Niece.
The Pekin School Board approved contracts for two new teachers, Miss Elizabeth Robey, music, and Mrs. Nancee Cook, special education.
120 took part in the annual Junior Olympics held at Pekin Sunday afternoon, May 13.
Commencement ceremonies for the class of 1979 were held May 21 at Pekin with Jack Shelly, Professor of Journalism and Mass Communication at ISU, as speaker. There were 59 seniors graduating.
Auctioneer Raymond “Bub” Hoskins of Richland will be competing in the World’s Champion Auctioneer Contest to be held June 16 in Brush, Colorado.
JUNE
Richland Lions Club was very pleased with the reaction of generosity shown by several people who donated hogs to the club to sell and use the money for Lions Club projects, both local and statewide.
Bill Anderson, Pekin Middle School social studies teacher, was selected by the Pekin Education Association as the first recipient of their outstanding educator award.
Plans for Richland Homecoming ’79 are well underway announced Commercial Club President Mike Hadley. The Commercial Club is responsible for the event which is held every five years.
Louisa Publishing Co., Ltd. of Wapello this week announced the purchase of the Clarion, a consolidation of the Richland Clarion and Brighton Enterprise, located at Packwood in Jefferson County. According to Michael Hodges, an executive officer of Louise Publishing, the purchase is effective July 1. The Clarion will be consolidated with the present Richland Plainsman.
JULY
The Brighton City Council opened bids at their July meeting in preparation for the building of the new Community and Fire Hall.
The weather refused to cooperate during the July 4 holiday and due to the rain the Lions Club Annual Tractor Pull had to be canceled. The rain did not stop the Lions from putting on their chicken/beef barbeque and the Horse Show in the evening.
The Packwood Betterment Council Horse Show was a success with Dick McCormick heading up the event.
The Richland Homecoming activities began Thursday afternoon, July 12 with a welcome from Commercial Club President Mike Hadley and the response from farmer Richlander, Dr. Jay Swarzwelter.
The Board of Advisors for the Outstanding Young Men of America Awards Program announced today that Garry Sievers of Richland las been selected for inclusion in the 1979 edition of “Outstanding Young Men of America.”
AUGUST
Ted and Eileen Spray hosted a Japanese boy, Toshiyuki Tominago. Also, Kenneth and Doris Nordyke hosted Shunji Suzumura of Japan. Both are sponsored by the Lions Club.
Packwood Lions Club boosted the goal for Packwood Community Housing, Inc. by $500.
The Richland Veterinary Clinic, owned and operated by Dr. Gene Hoy and Dr. Steve Menke, was featured in the August issue of Veterinary Economics, a monthly publication sent to all graduate veterinarians and senior veterinarians in the United States.
Ollie Baptist Church celebrated 125 years.
