Jerry Reynolds, 8, son of Mr. and Mrs. Arvin Reynolds, just east of Ollie, fell in front of a circular lawn mower at the home of his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Kessel Tuesday morning. His right arm was so severely injured that doctors found it necessary to amputate the arm just below the shoulder. The accident occurred about 10 a.m. while the boy was at the home of his grandparents who live on the adjoining farm. He was rushed to the Jefferson County Hospital by his father and two uncles, Harold and Howard Kessel. The father of the lad, and Father Paul C. Wetzstein donated blood for the transfusions. Both the Reynolds and Kessel families are members of the Mother Cabrini parish of Richland. Jerry attends school at Ollie and was in the second grade during the term that just closed. There are three other children in the family, Sherry, Brent, and Steven.
Pfc. Kevin D. Hinshaw left May 17 for Fort Lewis, Washington after 34 days furlough with his family and parents, Mr. and Mrs. Loren Hinshaw. They received word that he arrived in Fort Lewis, May 19. From there he will go to Okinawa.

The Washington, Jefferson, and Keokuk County Boards of Education will hold a closed-door meeting on Monday, May 22 to decide the fate of the proposed Lake Darling community School proposal. Their decision will be either to let the residents of the area vote upon the proposal or to dissolve it. Regardless of how you stand on the issue – for or against – the time has come for the people to inform their county board that as a free people they should be allowed to vote on this issue. The County Boards themselves thought this was the proper way to settle the issue when they allowed the territory to be set up originally, with the intention of permitting the residents of the area involved to vote on the proposal. At the last minute, due no doubt to pressure from a minority, they decided there were too many objectors to permit the proposal coming to a vote. Two years have elapsed. The proposal has been in the court, discussed pro and con, and has been kicked around in numerous ways. But, the fact remains, the proposal is still intact and could be settled as all issues of this nature should be – By A Vote Of The People. The only RIGHT way to decide this issue is by a vote of the people involved – not by the vote of 15 men, most of whom reside outside of the proposed area. Now is the time, residents of the proposed area, to inform your County School board that you wish to vote on this issue and will abide by the results of that election. Do it TODAY – Monday, May 22 may to too late! (Reprinted from the Brighton Enterprise)
