Steve Connelly, 11-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. R.C. Connelly was injured Friday morning while waiting at the school grounds to take the bus to swimming classes in Fairfield. He was tripped while scuffling, and fell, striking his head on the cement. His injuries were not thought to be serious until he became ill and unsteady on his feet. He was taken to the family physician who had him hospitalized. It was thought for a time that surgery would be necessary. He is recovering and was dismissed from the Jefferson County Hospital Tuesday morning.
Results of special election of directors for the newly formed Pekin School District was held Wednesday. Directors for the long term are Glenn Braden, Harry Sterling, and Minor R. Ellis. Other district directors elected were Leonard Kessel, Ernest Nelson and Gilbert Dickinson. Directors at large, two to be elected were Minor R. Ellis and Kenneth Steinbeck. Unopposed for treasurer was Leo Power with 427 votes. Northwest director is Glenn Braden 391 votes, north director is Leonard Kessel with 237 votes with Dale Ingle receiving 204. Northeast director is Gilbert Dickinson with 322 votes and Raymond Greiner defeated with 116 votes. Southeast director is Ernest Nelson with 241 votes over Willis Mitchell with 181 votes. Southwest director is Harry Sterling with 363 votes. Directors at large, two to be elected, resulted with Minor R. Ellis having 327 votes, Kenneth Steinbeck with 276 and Robert Wonderlich with 224. In the northeast district the vote on contested offices gave Dickinson 114 and Greiner 46; Kessel 73 and Ingle 61; Mitchell 67 and Nelson 60; Ellis 87, Steinbeck 146 and Wonderlich 47.
A bridal shower was held Saturday evening in the social room of the Ollie Methodist Church for Mrs. Helen Ward, bride of Dan Ward. There were sixty-six guests who signed the guest book, presented by Shirley Ward. Mrs. Edna Shy gave a humorous reading and Mary Denise Gott sang a solo accompanied by Mrs. Orville Hradek for the entertainment. Mrs. Hradek introduced the bride to the guests and escorted her to the gift table. It was attractively decorated in white with accents of blue, with a blue and white canopy effect in the center of the table. Assisting the bride with her gifts were Charlotte Paxton of Des Moines, Karen Fritchen, Julie Gott and Shirley and Marshia Ward, sisters of the bridegroom. Mrs. Arville Ward and Mrs. Darrell Ward poured at the tea table. The table was covered with lace cloth over blue linen, centered with an arrangement of flowers with blue candles in crystal holders. White cake with miniature blue bells was served to the guests. Assisting Mrs. Hradek in the dining room were Mrs. Albert Buttery, Mrs. Paul Ott, Mrs. Robert Gott, Mrs. Rex Reinier, Mrs. Billy Northup, Mrs. Alfred Wallerich, Mrs. Glen Hawley and Mrs. Irvin Laugh.
