The Packwood fire department was called out at 4:15 a.m. Friday morning to a barn fire at the Raymond Sheraden residence on Highway 78. The Hedrick fire department was also called to the scene of the fire. Firemen say they think a tree was struck by lightning nearby, which ignited the barn. The Packwood fire department was also called out Tuesday, Sept. 6 about 11:30 p.m. to put out a fire in the engine of a tractor pulling a semi-trailer. The fire was south of Don Atwood’s home on the highway.
This week’s Neighbor of the Week is Mrs. Ella Ingle of Ollie. Ella was born at Manlius, Illinois July 17, 1898. She is the daughter of Albert and Leora Hullinger McWilliams. She lived in Illinois until her marriage to Mart Ingle on Jan. 24, 1916 in Ottumwa. Ella joined the Manlius Baptist Church when she was nine years old. She transferred her membership to the Ollie Baptist after they moved to Ollie. Mart and Ella started their home life farming on the Arnold Malott farm at Compentine and lived there for eleven years. They later bought their farm north of Ollie where they lived before retiring, and moving to town. Ella had four children, a daughter Elsie Bottorff of Ottumwa, who is in charge of medicine at the Ottumwa Hospital, and three sons all of Ollie, Harold owns and operates a filling station, along with his wife, Agnes; Dale farms; and Melvin works construction and is the mayor of Ollie. She has 11 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. Ella is a member of the Ollie Baptist Church Ladies Aid, and was one of the ladies to start the I’ll Be Seeing You Club of Ollie. This club started out as a farm project, sewing, cooking and so forth and is still going strong. Ella has always enjoyed working in the garden. She says she never has wasted a thing in her garden. She used her watermelon skins to make preserves, canned all her own meats and vegetables, and used what was left in the garden in vegetable soup. Ella’s greatest joy in life was raising her children, and spending lots of time with them. She is an active lady and does most of her own yard work. She was a substitute cook at the Farson school house for nine years and the Ollie school cook for three years which she left at that time due to her husband’s illness. She enjoyed her work at the school very much. Ella has had a very busy, happy life and praises the Lord for all he has done for her.
