On June 17, nineteen 4th-6th grade students from Washington and Keokuk Counties participated in a hands-on agriculture field trip. The day was led Samantha Jamison and Holly Beinhart of Washington County Extension and Abby Sieren of Keokuk County Farm Bureau. The group visited various ag businesses and farms in Washington and Keokuk County, including the Reed Shrimp Farm, Premier 1 Supplies, Farmers Coop, Keota Veterinary Clinic, and Pleasant Valley Greenhouse. It was a great day taking “Agriculture in the Classroom” out to the industry.
Throughout the day the kids learned about how different careers in agriculture can be — that people can work outdoors, hands — on, or in offices in supporting roles. The students saw the daily operations and heard about what each farm/business does from the owners/operators. Many included hand — on activities or demonstrations. By the end of the day the kids left saying things such as “I might actually want to be a vet someday” and “How do I get to work here?”
Special thanks go out to all of the hosts and sponsors that make this day possible.
