In response to the recent letters and articles in the Ledger concerning the swimming beach at Bonnifield Lake, I say, ?It isn?t big enough.?
Concerns have been voiced by our police chief over people swimming beyond the ropes. So why don?t the ropes go out past the first yellow buoy? Every pool I have ever been in has some sort of marker that designates where the shallow water ends and deeper water begins. Why not at the lake?
Also, it would be nice to have a place to purchase food and drink. This could also serve as the place at which you could rent canoes or pontoon, kayaks even. It would provide a few more jobs for our youth.
I do hope the city council has a plan of action for the development of the area of Bonnifield Lake. I will give them one idea, free of charge: Build several green cabins, using the latest technology. Make them available year-round. Again we are looking at jobs for our area.
I will admit when my children first started going to Bonnifield, I was not thrilled. But I have come to see that it serves a useful niche in our community. Many people cannot afford to go to the pool. I would much rather see them enjoy the water at Bonnifield than in a river with its uncertain currents.
