Carbon pipeline opposition to meet in Fairfield
Jun. 9, 2022 1:55 pm
Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement (Iowa CCI) will host an informational meeting Friday, June 10 at the Fairfield Public Library to discuss the proposed Navigator carbon dioxide (CO2) pipeline. If built, it would cross the state of Iowa diagonally from northwest to southeast, including the southeast counties of Jefferson, Mahaska, Wapello, Keokuk, Van Buren, and Lee.
According to a news release from Iowa CCI, “While CO2 pipelines are promoted and funded as a means to address climate change, environmentalists say that any benefits are negligible and see this as an example of ‘greenwashing.’ Landowners and farmers do not want their soils compacted or tiles damaged by the construction process, and the use of eminent domain for these projects is highly contentious. Furthermore, there are major safety issues given that pressurized CO2 is a hazardous liquid dangerous to human health.”
The meeting is on behalf of the Iowa Carbon Pipeline Resistance Coalition, which is made up of the Iowa CCI, Iowa Sierra Club, Great Plains Action Society, Food & Water Watch, and the Science and Environmental Health Network.
Speakers from the Coalition will describe the carbon pipeline projects and the problems they raise. Area residents will have an opportunity to comment and share concerns. Those who would like to work with the Coalition will have a chance to be part of local planning.
The meeting will be held on Friday, June 10, from 7-8:30 pm, at the Fairfield Public Library, 104 West Adams, in Fairfield.
