The Carnegie Historical Museum in Fairfield has announced the Heritage Farm of the month for August 2022. The DeVore family farm in Locust Grove Township has been in their family since 1864. Daniel DeVore was the first member of the family to stake a claim for this property. He is the great-great grandfather of the current generation of Ryan DeVore. Alan DeVore followed his father Daniel and then passed the farm on to Guy DeVore. Marian DeVore followed Guy and now Ryan is the DeVore in charge of this farm for the family for 158 years.
This is the third month that the Carnegie Historical Museum has been highlighting the farms in Jefferson County which have been recognized by the Iowa Farm Bureau as being in the same family for 150 years plus. It is our hope to carry this forward into 2023 and recognize all 14 farms, which have received this status at the state level.
The Fairfield First Friday Artwalk on Aug. 5, 2022, beginning at 6 p.m. will allow interested patrons of the Museum to come and speak directly with the members of the DeVore family. A dedicated display case will be available for viewing on the third floor of the museum for the month of August. Please take time to come and learn about the history of these farms and what they mean to Jefferson County, Iowa.
The Carnegie Historical Museum will be open Friday, Aug. 5, during Fairfield First Fridays for another installment of its series on Heritage Farms in Jefferson County. (Andy Hallman/The Union)
