The Fairfield Art Association will be hosting a Linoleum Printmaking Class throughout May. These classes will be with Fairfield artist John Schirmer.
John has been a printmaker for 40 years, specializing in wood block prints.
“I attended art fairs all over the country receiving many awards,” Schirmer said. “I have carved prints in linoleum, however I prefer wood because of my natural friendship with wood. I have carved for the furniture industry including Baker Furniture, carved wooden signs and sculpture — Mr. & Mrs. Santa Clause for Fairfield’s Christmas display. Printmakers are very enthusiastic about paper — I use an Italian paper called Rosapenna Cream. I use an oil base ink which produces a rich deep color. After printing the black, I hand color each print using watercolor & gouache, an opaque water-based color."
There will be five sessions on Saturdays in May from 10 a.m. — noon in the FAA Studio in FACC. The fee of $125 includes all materials. John will lecture and demonstrate, and participants will work on their own print. The class is for adults at all artistic levels from beginner to experienced. Class size will be limited so preregister soon at FAA Studio (Tuesday through Friday from 1-5 p.m.), or email Suzan Kessel at Suzan1252@aol.com.
