Earth Day is a special day dedicated to celebrating and protecting our planet. It’s celebrated every year on April 22nd, and it’s a time for people all over the world to reflect on how we can take better care of our environment.
The first Earth Day was held in 1970, and it was a major turning point in raising awareness about pollution, climate change, and the importance of conservation.
On Earth Day, people often participate in activities like planting trees, picking up litter, or learning about sustainable practices that can help reduce our environmental impact. Schools, businesses, and communities come together to organize events that highlight the importance of protecting our planet’s resources, from clean air and water to the health of our forests and oceans.
What’s great about Earth Day is that it’s not just about one day—it serves as a reminder that we can make small changes every day to help the environment. Whether it’s using less plastic, conserving water, or supporting eco-friendly products, every little action counts. So, Earth Day is both a celebration and a call to action, reminding us all that we have a responsibility to take care of the world we live in. Let’s cherish and protect our beautiful Earth!
Opportunities to celebrate Earth Week in Fairfield are taking place the weekend of April 26 and 27.
Mend in Public Day, (Stitch It, Don’t Ditch It!) is happening on Saturday, the 26th in the Gazebo on the Fairfield Square from 10 am-3 pm. Bring your own chair, repair pile or other fiber projects and necessary equipment for a drop-in “stitching social”. If you need it, Sew Awesome will provide general guidance in making your own repairs. Electricity is available. Come for an hour or stay the entire time.
Mend in Public Day, a world wide observance in honor of the 1,138 textile workers who died when a building housing garment factories collapsed in Savar, Bangladesh, April 24, 2013. It’s a form of gentle activism, standing as a beacon of change in a world inundated with fashion waste. By participating, you’ll be part of a global creative day of action resisting the cycle of excess through repair and reuse. More information about Mend in Public Day can be found at fashionrevolution.org.
April 26 is also Local Yarn Store Day. To celebrate, The At Home Store, also on the Fairfield Square, hosts Torrey Witherspoon for a fun sock darning demonstration from 2-3 pm.
