On Tuesday, March 14, Fairfield Public Library celebrated International Pi Day with fresh baked fruit and custard pies prepared by local community members.
Pi, most often expressed as “π”, is a key number in mathematics that is the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter, approximately equal to 3.14159.
The tradition at the library of preparing pies for Pi Day was started by former Children’s Librarian Afron Pedrick Hallauer, who was called upon this year by Adult Services Specialist Joy Craig to contribute a pie for the event. Pedrick Hallauer contributed three pies, of which two were peach and the third was a mixed berry pie.
Other pies were contributed by Joy Craig, Library Director Al Schmidt Mickunas, Children’s Librarian Sara Martindale and her daughter Audrey Martindale, Heidi Salmonson, Mary Boseley, and Barabra Craig.
Joy Craig and her mother Barbara served pieces of pies to the community starting at 3:14 p.m. at the library with over one hundred pieces served from the Volunteer Center in the central lobby of the library. The staff at the library expressed their surprise at the high turnout despite the spontaneous nature of the event this year.
In addition to Pi Day, many free all-ages events were held at the library, including a presentation on restoring Jefferson County’s ecosystem through planting native species on March 16; a free monthly movie offering on Friday night; a business seminar provided by MIU’s College of Business Administration on March 18 co-sponsored by the library, and a presentation entitled “A Bicycling Adventure Through Iran” by Hans Frischeisen on March 19.
Community members are encouraged to check the library’s online calendar for more details about upcoming events.
