Fairfield library to host origami events
Enjoy the Peace of Paper
Jun. 10, 2024 2:27 pm
Join local enthusiast and Origami guide Vedder Wright to learn the basics of geometrical origami at this recurring program this month at the Fairfield Public Library. All are welcome from beginners to experienced folders. Materials will be provided free to participants.
Origami Movie - NOVA: The Origami Revolution
To kick off this event, there will be a showing of a NOVA episode on Saturday, June 15, from 1:00-2:00 pm. The story highlights how scientists and engineers harness the principles of origami to solve complex problems, showing its transformative impact on modern technology. The film features such “rock stars” as Robert Lang, who walked away from a successful NASA engineering career to fold paper full time.
Hands-on Origami Workshop: June 22, 1-2:30 p.m.
Discover the “peace of paper” with Vedder at the Fairfield library and become a member of this growing international movement. Class size for this first workshop is limited to 12 participants and pre-registration with Library staff is strongly encouraged. Abundant internet resources will be supplied, such as online tutorials and convention news. Origami is a relaxing and focusing activity that combines manual skills with visual problem solving, offering a meditative state of absorption.
This class for adults involves clear steps to create beautiful paper models in the warm company of a group of fellow folders. More advanced projects will be offered in an ongoing series of meetings, geared to student abilities.
About the Instructor
Vedder Wright has taught origami in Boston, Fairfield and elsewhere. He enjoys sharing and learning this engaging passion with students of all abilities. After studying geometry at the Université de Montréal, he discovered origami groups in Cambridge, MA and has never been the same. He has attended over eight yearly Origami USA conventions in NYC, where hundreds of international folders gather to teach, socialize, and exhibit their creations. Recently moved to Fairfield, he would love to start an origami group here.
