Fairfield volleyball was unmatched Thursday night. The Trojans went 3-0 and avoided dropping a set at the four-team WACO volleyball event.
The Trojans (8-2, 1-0 Southeast Conference) found their footing quickly after a 21-17 win in their first set of the event against New London. They knocked off the Tigers 21-14 in the second set before beating hosts WACO 2-0 (21-15, 21-12).
Fairfield finished the night by holding Cardinal to single digits in both sets. The Trojans defeated the Comets 2-0 (21-6, 21-4).
“I’ve been very pleased with the girls, how they’ve played so far,” coach Vicki Rebling said. “We have a lot of options to run as an offense. So we keep working on those options and taking different angles to our hits and things like that.”
Fairfield has the weekend off before it travels to Washington for its second SEC game of the season. The Trojans and Demons will square off at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday at Washington High School. The match will be broadcast on the Southeast Iowa Video Network Facebook and YouTube channels.
The final match of the night was a battle for the second best record at the event. New London and WACO squared off after both teams defeated Cardinal and fell to Fairfield.
Spurred on by a crowd of students, the Warriors knocked off the Lions 21-15 in both sets. After an 0-5 start to the season, WACO, guided by first-year head coach Addison Fort, went 2-1 on its home court.
“The girls were very excited, and I’m glad it happened on our home cour,” Fort said. “We had a big crowd, parents, family coming to watch and that last game we even had the student section which was awesome to keep the energy high in here, and we played well.“
WACO followed its home event up with a 1-3 showing at the English Valleys Varsity Volleyball Tournament on Saturday. The Warriors (3-9) begin a run of four Southeast Iowa Super Conference North games with a road match at Wapello on Tuesday.
Thursday’s event was the first action of the season for New London. The Lions pushed Fairfield in their first set of the season. After falling to the Trojans, New London quickly picked up its first win of the campaign with a 2-0 (21-18, 21-11) victory over Cardinal.
“I’m starting three freshmen,” coach Jackie Housman said. “So we are a super young team, and we have our other three captains out there that are really leading the team well. I’m super excited, super proud of them. They worked hard.”
New London dropped three matches at the Nikes Varsity Volleyball Invitational at Burlington Notre Dame High School on Saturday. The Tigers played Fort Madison on Monday in a match that happened after presstime. They start SEISC South play against Van Buren County on Tuesday.
Cardinal lost all three of its matches at Thursday’s event. The Comets nearly took the second set of its first match against WACO, but fell 22-20 after they lost 21-15 in the opening set. It lost its second match to New London before a defeat to Fairfield.
The Comets have 10 days off before a double header against South Central Conference foe Centerville on Sept. 16.
