What began as a backyard hobby has turned into a full-fledged family adventure — one that serves up smoky, satisfying barbecue to hungry customers all over Southeast Iowa. Sweet ’n Saucy BBQ & Catering, owned by Tony and Norma Baker, is a family-run business where great food and community go hand in hand.
Their daughter, Shannan Baker, is the heart of the kitchen. A professionally trained chef, she brings both creativity and skill to every dish that comes out of the smoker.
“She’s made me a better cook — we’ve learned a lot from each other,” Tony said.
While the dine in restaurant on North Court Street offers a cozy spot for locals, Sweet ’n Saucy’s reach extends far beyond Fairfield. Their food trailer and catering services take their signature barbecue to festivals, fairs, and farmers markets throughout the region.
“The restaurant lets us stay connected to the community year-round and keep our team employed through the winter,” Tony said.
Known for classic wood-fired meats, Sweet ’n Saucy also takes pride in standout sides — especially their baked beans — and even crowd-pleasing vegetarian options.
“We say the carnivores have to like it too — that’s how we know it’s good,” Tony said.
From the Jefferson County Fair to weekend events across Iowa, the Bakers keep things fun and flavorful.
“We’re just having too much fun with what we’re doing,” Tony says. “As long as people are enjoying the food, we’ll keep showing up.”
