Four reasons you can’t stop talking about Fairfield

Fairfield, Iowa. You may have heard of it. Maybe your artsy friend won’t stop talking about the galleries. Maybe your foodie cousin won’t stop posting about their vegan lunch. Or maybe you just stumbled upon it, thinking, what’s the deal with this place?
Well, buckle up, because Fairfield isn’t your average small town. It’s a delightful paradox—where farm charm meets international flair, where creativity thrives, and where, if you visit once, you’ll probably start planning your return trip before you leave. Here’s why:
1. Our Food Scene Is Weirdly Amazing
For a town in the middle of Iowa, we eat like we have something to prove. From spicy pho at Asian Pho Bistro to flaky croissants at Bountiful Bakery, Fairfield’s dining scene is an unexpected masterpiece. Want a legendary pork tenderloin? Sweet n Saucy BBQ has you covered. A fan of local breweries? Fishback & Stephenson Cider House serves up thirst-quenching locally crafted hard cider. Prefer a vegan feast that could convert a carnivore? Mira’s Cafe is ready to impress. Or check out Veraison Wine Bar for a relaxing afternoon tasting European wines.
And for the coffee connoisseurs? The Bakehouse and Café Paradiso serve up some of the best espresso drinks this side of the Mississippi. (Pro tip: Café Paradiso is also a legendary music venue— more on that later.)
Pro Tip: Hit up the Fairfield Farmers Market for local goodies, and check out Restaurant Week to taste the town at its finest.
2. Art, Everywhere (No, Seriously, Everywhere)
Fairfield’s art scene doesn’t play by the rules. The ICON Gallery houses stunning Iowa contemporary art, the Fairfield Art Association fosters local talent, and the Wege Gallery on the Maharishi International University campus showcases rotating exhibits from local and regional artists.
And then there’s the art you just stumble upon—like the colorful outdoor murals and alleyway installations that add an extra layer of charm to downtown. Whether it’s a larger-than-life portrait, an abstract masterpiece, or a pop of unexpected color, Fairfield turns everyday spaces into creative experiences. Like the Immersive Art House which will have your head spinning with creativity!
And don’t forget the Fairfield Arts & Convention Center, which brings Broadway-caliber performances, comedy acts, and world-class musicians to town. This year’s lineup includes everything from rock and country legends to musical theater and first run movies. Who needs a big city when you’ve got a front-row seat here?
Pro Tip: Art Walks on the first Friday of the month turn downtown into an open-air festival of creativity. Don’t miss it!
3. We’re an Outdoor Haven (With an Extra Side of Zen)
Fairfield might be known for its artsy vibe, but we also know how to embrace the great outdoors. The 16-mile Fairfield Loop Trail gives you a scenic tour of prairies, woodlands, and lakes. Prefer paddling to pedaling? Head to Jefferson County Park for camping or birdwatching. Or try Waterworks Park for some kayaking.
And if you need a break from the hustle (or just want an excuse to do absolutely nothing), you’ll find plenty of peaceful spots for a little meditation. Fairfield is home to one of the largest meditation communities in the U.S., and if you stick around long enough, you may just find yourself joining a sunrise yoga class or accidentally participating in a drum circle in Central Park. (It happens.)
Pro Tip: Bring a bike, grab a coffee, and cruise the Loop Trail at golden hour. Trust us. It’s magic.
4. Fairfield Events: Lively Gatherings & Laid-Back Escapes
Fairfield doesn’t just have events—we throw experiences. Whether it’s Oktoberfest with wiener dog races, a town-wide holiday festival of lights, a Renaissance Festival or soothing soundbath events at Golden Magnolia Sanctuary, we know how to bring people together.
Music lovers, take note: Café Paradiso hosts legendary live performances, from blues to bluegrass to world music. During the summer, Live on the Square and Summerfest outdoor concerts transform the downtown into a music fest. And if you love electronic and experimental sounds, the Symmetry Music Festival is a must-experience event that brings a unique mix of music, art, and light shows to the area.

BONUS: The People and the Stories (A.K.A. Our Museums & Oddities)
Okay, we said four reasons, but we’re feeling generous, so here’s a bonus—and it’s a good one. Fairfield has some truly fascinating history, and our museums prove it.
- The Carnegie Historical Museum: The oldest Carnegie museum in Iowa, packed with quirky and surprising artifacts from Fairfield’s and Iowa’s past.
- Maasdam Barns: A beautifully preserved tribute to Fairfield’s role in the horse-powered farm industry.
- Johnny Clock Museum: Dedicated to the late John McLain, a legend who turned wood into art, crafting stunning hand-carved clocks that belong in a fairy tale.
And if you ask the locals, we might just let you in on a few more weird and wonderful stories. Like how Fairfield was the birthplace of the Iowa State Fair. Or why there’s two domes on campus. Or the time that RAGBRAI riders almost broke the internet and set a Guiness World record when they rolled through. But hey, you’ll have to visit to get the full scoop.
Pro Tip: Bring your curiosity. You never know what you’ll discover.
Come See for Yourself
Fairfield isn’t just a place to visit—it’s a place that sticks with you. Whether you come for the food, the arts, the nature, or just to see what all the hype is about, one thing is certain: You’ll leave with a story. (And, let’s be honest, probably a full stomach and a shopping bag or two.)
So, what are you waiting for? Get yourself to Fairfield. You’ll fall in love—we’re pretty sure of it.
