July was a busy month with Day Camps at Iowa State Extension and Outreach in Jefferson County. The Day Camps hosted in July were Animal Science and Safety Everyday, Backyard Bugs, Let’s Cook, and Island Adventures. The Animal Science and Safety Everyday was for kindergarten through seventh grade.
The campers got to see a service dog that is in training and a calf. They did several hands-on activities learning about topics from identification for animals to biosecurity. By the end of the day, many of the campers were even able to name and locate common bones within a dog’s skeleton.
The Backyard Bug Day Camp was for kindergarten through third grade. The campers learned about the anatomy of insects, and they got to go on a nature walk to find bugs and to be able to practice naming the different parts of the bugs. The camper’s favorite part of the day was seeing and being able to hold a Madagascar Hissing Cockroach. Also, they enjoyed learning about the life cycle of a butterfly and the craft about the life cycle.
Next, was the Let’s Cook! Day Camp, also for kindergarten through third grade. The campers learned how to cook French toast, cupcakes, sloppy joes, peanut butter protein balls, and make a fruit salad. Their favorite thing to eat was the cupcakes, and their overall favorite was making the peanut butter protein balls.
The last summer day camp, also for kindergarten through third grade, was Island Adventures. The campers learned about islands and survival skills such as cleaning dirty water and how to clean up oil spills. Overall, it was a great summer of day camps.
