Jefferson County ISU Extension hosts summer day camps
Jefferson County Extension had 19 little chefs in the kitchen on June 1 for the Cooking Challenge Day Camp. The campers learned how to work together as a team to bake and cook some new recipes. A highlight was learning how to make pasta sauce for their spaghetti.
Some of the campers' favorite parts of the day were baking the whole wheat bread and chocolate chip cookies. The campers learned how to make a great summer snack- frozen yogurt bark with fresh fruit on top. The campers really enjoyed being able to cook and bake new things!
The second day camp was Art Around the World on June 6. The focus of the camp was on different biomes from around the world. We talked about the biome and facts about it, and then the campers did a craft about each biome. We started off with the rainforest, and the campers made a jungle scene with oil pastels. With this, we also talked about the color wheel and how we mix certain colors to the color they need.
The next biome was taiga, where they learned about the forest; the campers painted along with a Bob Ross video of a forest landscape. All of the paintings looked fabulous and unique. The desert was a lot of the campers' favorite biome because they got to paint a pot and then plant a cactus in it.
Next, we talked about the tundra and created a food cycle of the different animals that are found in the tundra. Our last biome was the grassland, and the campers created an African themed diorama. All of the dioramas had their own twist to them; the campers' creativity was showcased well! It was a great day for learning and crafts!
