To the editor:
During the last several election cycles, voters were told that the most important topics of discussion were the state and federal budget and the creation of jobs. Social issues (life, marriage and family) were minimized and generally not mentioned by candidates or the media. These issues have been largely ignored in the current legislative session as well. Many have given up the fight for the unborn, Biblical marriage and traditional family values thinking, ?What?s the use, they won?t listen to me anyway.?
Our nation?s founders recognized the importance of a Biblical foundation. They believed that life is a fundamental right given by God. Marriage was established as a union between a man and a woman who raised children with the concept of personal responsibility and strong moral values.
The country has strayed so far away from these principles. Secular humanism and liberal thinking have eroded our nation?s foundations and our secure walls (faith in God and moral responsibility) are crumbling.
To date, over 53 million lives have been sacrificed in the name of ?choice.? This is more than the combined populations of Iowa, Minnesota, Illinois, Ohio, Michigan and Missouri! Our public schools teach that same-sex marriage is normal and acceptable. Family values are lost in the race to build wealth and a successful career. The media makes a mockery of fathers as leaders in many prime-time sitcoms. Christians are seeing our freedoms of speech and religion being slowly stripped away.
Many conservative Christians would like to see our nation return to its Biblical roots, but simply don?t know what to do. As a remedy for that predicament, a group of concerned citizens will gather to discuss specific actions that can be done.
Please join us for an organizational meeting of a grassroots group called Take a Stand. Our purpose is threefold: to actively promote the sanctity of life, traditional marriage, and family values consistent with Biblical principles; to encourage conservative Christians in Van Buren and Jefferson Counties to be firmly grounded in God?s Word, knowing what the Bible says about the issues; and to provide current information to our communities on state and federal legislation.
Our goal is to actively pursue these important issues with current office holders in Des Moines and Washington. We also seek to identify and enlist God-first candidates who stand firm for these values and motivate voters to elect these candidates.
Please join us for our introductory meeting Thursday, July 7 at 6 p.m. at the shelter house across from the Senior Center in Keosauqua. We?ll grill hamburgers for a light supper. If you have questions, please contact Emily Reneker (319-293-6352) or me (319-592-3812).
