Van Buren County school district receives STEM award
Mar. 21, 2023 4:25 am
The Iowa Governor’s STEM Advisory Council announced Van Buren County CSD as one of the 37 school districts receiving the STEM BEST (Businesses Engaging Students and Teachers) + HD (High Demand) Program models.
The STEM BEST Program brings schools and businesses together to provide students with real workplace experiences. The program helps introduce students to businesses and career opportunities in Iowa, while also gaining career-ready skills.
The STEM BEST + HD Program encourages teachers and industry professionals to work side-by-side to develop a work-based learning model that incorporates STEM subjects like mathematics and science with experiential learning opportunities to emphasize high-demand skills for the workplace. The Council’s investment of professional and financial support can be used for curriculum development and coordination, educator training and development in workplace-classroom integration, and preparing work-based learning environments.
Van Buren County CSD plans to purchase the Colorado 1630 Deluxe Model commercial printer. The capabilities of this specific unit will provide students work based learning opportunities to design graphics for the school and community. Graphic banners and signage are key components to any business marketing strategy. Students will have the opportunity to design graphics, print commercial grade material, and gain hands-on experience applying and installing materials.
This award will give students access to authentic learning opportunities that provide a multitude of benefits; collaboration skills with peers and community members, creativity, problem-solving, critical thinking, and employability skills. This opportunity will allow our students to work hands-on in a potential career choice environment for them.
“STEM-based education teaches children more than science and mathematics concepts. The focus on hands-on learning with real-world applications helps develop a variety of skill sets, including creativity and 21st-century skills,” said Jessie Greiner, Van Buren County CSD Director of Innovation and Technology Integration. “Regardless of the future career path considered by these students, these skill sets go a long way to preparing them to be innovative. I am excited to see our students working collaboratively to help beautify our school and community.”
The STEM Council Executive Committee reviewed and approved 37 new or expanded partnerships supported by guidance, collaboration and financial investment of up to $40,000 each.
