The Van Buren Players, Keosauqua, have chosen A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum as its 2023 production.
This show was written in 1962 by Burt Shevelove (No, No, Nanette) and Larry Gelbart (M*A*S*H*) with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. It had a long run on Broadway and the movie with Zero Mostel, Phil Silvers and Buster Keaton soon followed. It has been revived several times and has won numerous Tony Awards. This musical continues to be produced worldwide as an enjoyable combination of continuous comedy, vaudeville slapstick, and wonderful Sondheim music.
The Van Buren Players have been producing winter musicals, summer comedies and children’s workshops since 1963, taking a necessary two years off for a tornado and COVID! Directing this year is Kathleen Paulek with Heather Charbonneau and Quenton Dodson assisting. Music Director is Marcie Atwood, Orchestra Director is Jim Edgeton, Costumer is Carol Harlan and Choreographer is Stefany Wells.
Production dates are Feb. 24, 25, and 26, 2023. Auditions will be held Jan. 2 and 3 and are open to high school students and adults.
Van Buren Players board members are Linda Mitcheltree, Barb Morris, Heather Charbonneau, Carol Harlan, Heidi Bainbridge, Marie Atwood, Sonia Stookesberry, Stefany Wells, Julie Garrels, Jessica Reed, Tom Allen, Tom Vohries, Quenton Dodson, John Grunwald, Kathleen Paulek and Lynn Manning.
