WILLIAMSBURG -- Williamsburg advanced five wrestlers to the state tournament following the Class 2A district meet they hosted Saturday.
“All our kids did an outstanding job, and they all can be proud of how they battled, whether they qualified or not,” Williamsburg Coach Grant Eckenrod said.
“We have had to grind through some tough times this season but they all hung in there.”
Lincoln Schropp (113) and Carson Grier (285) won district titles. Grier pinned Tayte Peterschmidt of Anamosa in the championship in 18 seconds. Schropp won twice by pin.
Also advancing are Nile Sinn (150), Cael Moore (175) and Bryan Riedel (190). Riedel lost in the championship, then bounced back to beat Max Janssen of Vinton-Shellsburg in the wrestleback, by technical fall, 15-0.
“All five of our qualifiers have a great shot to do some damage in Des Moines, and I think that’s the mindset they will have,” Eckenrod said.
The state tournament begins Feb. 14, at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.
Class 1A
At the District 10 wrestling meet at South Hamilton High School in Jewell, three Iowa Valley wrestlers advanced to the state tournament.
Nolan Kriegel (157), Taite Peach (190) and Garrett Hoyt (285) all lost in the championship. Peach and Hoyt had to win a wrestleback.
Peach pinned Graham Peters of South Hamilton in 49 seconds to place second, and Hoyt topped Keegan Long of Earlham by a score of 9-4.
“I couldn’t be more happy for the three of them,” Iowa Valley Coach Jeremy Kriegel said. “They were able to win some big matches throughout the day to punch their ticket to state.”
Belle Plaine had one state qualifier, Aidan Timm (138) placed second.
At District 8 in Pleasantville, English Valleys/Tri-County had one qualifier. Luke Moore (215) won his weight class, edging Quintyn Rocha of West Branch in the title match, 1-0.
