Accountants release audit for Iowa County landfill
Feb. 14, 2024 8:04 am
Roof, Gerdes, Erlbacher, PLC, certified public accountants in Des Moines, released an audit last week of the Regional Environmental Improvement Commission of Iowa County.
According to the auditors, the Commission’s receipts totaled $886,457 for the year that ended June 30, 2023, a 4% decrease from the prior year.
The decrease in receipts is due primarily to a decrease in receipts from gate fees, the auditors said. The increase in disbursements is due to an increase in equipment purchase disbursements.
The auditors reported seven findings related to the receipt and expenditure of taxpayer funds and provided recommendations to address each of the findings.
The findings address issues such as a lack of segregation of duties, the preparation of financial statements, the lack of a written investment policy and concerns with the 28E agreement.
One of the seven findings was repeated from the prior year, auditors said. The Commission has a fiduciary responsibility to provide oversight of the landfill’s operations and financial transactions.
