Families in the Williamsburg Community School District were notified Wednesday, May 3, that an airsoft gun had been recovered on school property. District superintendent Dr. Chad Garber said the school is proceeding with an investigation and the Williamsburg Police Department is also conducting an investigation with the school’s full cooperation.
Airsoft guns resemble traditional firearms but shoot non-lethal plastic pellets.
“They are essentially a toy,” said Williamsburg Chief of Police Justin Parsons. “The school acted very quickly. Once they determined the gun was a toy, they moved on to determine what legal action would follow.”
He declined further comment, citing the ongoing investigation, but did say the investigation has encompassed both the district’s high school and elementary buildings.
Dr. Garber did not elaborate on details of the incident, which took place early in the school day.
“I don't have a lot of specifics that I can share, at this point, outside of what was shared publicly,” he said.
The letter Dr. Garber released to the Raider community is as follows:
"Hello, Williamsburg Schools' community members. I wanted to let you know that we're aware of some social media posts that indicate that a gun was brought to school today in our district. Building administrators and staff received that report this morning as well, and took steps immediately to determine if the report was accurate. Collection of information is ongoing.
“We can advise that an airsoft-style pistol was recovered this morning on school property. While an airsoft pistol is different from a firearm, the presence of that device poses a disruption to our schools and can certainly be unsettling for everyone involved. No students were injured, and as I said, we are continuing to collect information about the circumstances surrounding this matter.
“While I can't share any further specifics regarding a situation that may be related to a specific student or students, please know that we take situations like those being shared online very seriously. The District will follow District policy in the investigation and handling of this matter.
“The Williamsburg Police Department has been notified, and they will conduct a parallel investigation into the matter as they deem necessary. The District will fully cooperate with law enforcement in its investigation as appropriate.
“Thank you very much to students and families who worked cooperatively this morning to help ensure that all students, staff, and visitors can feel safe at Williamsburg Schools. We appreciate the concern that was shared and the reports that were made. It does take a community effort to ensure students, staff, and visitors feel like they can come to our schools and are safe doing so."
