WILLIAMSBURG — Williamsburg’s Rubianne Allison and Kenzi Driscoll captured top 10 finishes for the Raiders’ girls golf team in their first 18-hole meet of the season Wednesday in the Raider Invitational at Stone Creek Golf Club.
Allison tied for seventh and Driscoll tied for ninth.
Golfers battled the wind, which has been a common theme this golf season, but at least the weather was warm this time, with temperatures reaching into the 60s.
“The wind and dryness of the course made for a challenging venue,” Williamsburg coach Todd Subbert said. “I think the greens were really dry and firm, so they were not receptive to iron shots which made scoring even more difficult.”
As a team, the Raiders finished third on their home course, with a quality field of teams and individuals.
“It was a really good field which provided us with a great challenge right out of the gates,” Subbert said. “Overall I was pleased with our performance.”
Solon, a team qualifier last season in Class 3A, snatched the team title with a 361 on the par 71. Mid-Prairie was second at 387, and the Raiders were one behind at 388.
Second- to fifth-places were separated by only five strokes.
The lowest individual score on the day came from Benton Community’s Halle Sobaski, who shot a 77. Sobaski placed sixth last year at state in 3A.
Allison shot a 93 for the Raiders, with Driscoll one stroke behind at 94. Both shot par on three holes.
“I was pleased with Driscoll's effort,” Subbert said. “That was her first meet of the year after having been sick for some time. For her to come out and be our secondlowest scorer was impressive.”
Rounding out the scoring for the Raiders was Demi Horvath, who placed 17th with a 100, and Jenna Yearian, who was also in the top 20, with a 101.
It was the fourth competition on the season for the Raiders and the second on their home course.
Most recently, in a conference triangular Monday at Stone Creek Golf Club, the Raiders shot 208 as a team through nine holes.
Wednesday marked an improvement. Yearian, individually, had the most improvement in the Raiders’ varsity group, going from a 57 through nine-holes to a 101 through 18 Wednesday.
“We're a third of the way into the season and I'd say we are trending in the right direction,” said Subbert. “We always talk about our goal of being good in May, not necessarily now.”
“We like to see steady progress over the season, so we are in form for post-season play. I feel like we are on pace for that goal.”
