Two area senior golfers ended their seasons on day two of the Boys’ State Golf Tournaments Wednesday.
Williamsburg’s Robbie Allison competed in Class 3A at Pheasant Ridge Golf Course in Cedar Falls, while English Valleys’ Gage Heyne competed in 1A at South Hills Golf Course in Waterloo.
Both shot better scores on day two than in their first rounds Tuesday.
CLASS 3A
CEDAR FALLS — Allison finished 47th in the 3A meet after a second-round 78 on the par-72, which gave him a total of 159 for the tournament (81-78).
Allison recorded three birdies through the 36 holes, two coming Wednesday.
“Overall I didn’t play my best over the two days, but I was happy I made it to state,” Allison said. “Just getting to compete here is something I’ll always remember.”
To start his second round, Allison made several par saves on the back nine where Allison shot only four over par in the tournament.
“My putting really saved my game,” said Allison. “There were a lot of moments I was able to avoid big numbers. That part of my game kept me in it even when other shots weren’t going as planned.”
Allison plans to continue his golf career at Coe College starting in the fall.
“Playing at state was an amazing experience, and it means a lot to finish my high school career on this stage,” Allison said.
CLASS 1A
WATERLOO — Heyne shot an 81 on day two after shooting 85 on day one on the par-72 course for a total of 166. Heyne finished 26th in the field.
The course was longer then any Heyne had seen this season, and the greens were sometimes difficult to read.
“The course was longer than other courses I've played this year, but that didn't affect me much,” Heyne said. “The greens, however, were quite tricky to get down as they were a bit deceiving on how they would roll. This led me to have a bit more three putts than I would've liked.”
Heyne had a birdie each day and scored an eagle on day one on the par-four hole six.
“State golf didn't go as I had hoped, but I still am proud of myself for getting to that point,” Heyne said. “I've enjoyed this season a lot.”
As a runner and a golfer, Heyne has had a storied career and a great senior year. Heyne will run cross-country and track and field at Wartburg College next season.
“It has been a great year as I have improved my game and form throughout the year and set many personal records,” Heyne said. “It was a great way to end my high school career as an EV Bear.”
