SOLON — Cold, windy and sometimes rainy conditions the Williamsburg boys golf team had to do deal with in its 18-hole season opener at the Solon Boys Golf Invite.
Lake MacBride Golf Course saw feel-like temperatures in the mid 30s much of the afternoon. Most rounds took six or seven hours to complete as players competed in groups of five on the nine-hole course.
“I thought our guys battled through the tough conditions all day,” Williamsburg coach Brad Schaefer said. “It played very slow and was a long day.”
The Raiders were led by Robbie Allison who shot a 79 (+7) on the par 72 course.
Allison finished tied for 12th on the leaderboard and carded one birdie in his round on the par five 16th hole.
Allison was in line for a top five finish but saw water on his final hole of the day and finished with a triple bogey.
Solon’s Isaiah Zoske, Class 3A state runner-up last season, posted the lowest score on the day, a 73.
As a team, the Raiders finished seventh out of 12 teams in the field, posting a score of 337. The Raiders recorded five birdies as a team.
Cooper Bott was the next lowest scorer for the Raiders, shooting an 83.
“We knew Solon, West Delaware and Independence were going to be very hard to catch,“ said Schaefer. ”We just had too many penalty shots, and we let a couple poor decisions or bad swings make it hard to save for bogey, resulting in a double or triple.“
The course is surrounded by housing, so there’s an out-of-bounds on nearly every hole, and a few holes have water in play.
It was a long day, but Coach Schaefer saw a lot of benefit in opening up the season with a 18-hole match. The Raiders played against some of the top competition in the WaMaC, teams that the Raiders will have to see later in the season.
“I like the 18-hole tournament because it favors the athletes who can mentally grind for six, seven hours,” Schaefer said. “It was good to see some great competition early in the year.
“We will continue to get better each and every night.”
Due to more cold and windy weather, the Raiders’ dual against West Delaware Monday has been moved to Tuesday.
Then the team faces Mount Vernon in a dual April 14.
