Altenhofen, Gryp take first at South Tama

South Tama Invitational
TAMA — Cecelia Gryp and Valerie Altenhofen made their season debuts for the Williamsburg girls’ wrestling team Thursday night, and both came out on top, winning their weight divisions.
Gryp pinned her way to the 135 pound first-place match and finished with her fastest pin on the night (29 seconds) over Iowa Valley’s Claire Smolik.
Altenhofen had a fall, a no contest and a tech fall on her way to the first-place match at 140. Altenhofen pinned Solon’s Lucianna Miller 48 seconds into the second period.
Iowa Valley’s Raelene Hawkins finished third in the 190-pound division, pinning Sadie Burke in the third-place match.
BGM’s Shayla VanNevel finished runner-up at 125.
Independence Invitational
INDEPENDENCE — The Williamsburg girls’ wrestlers saw tough competition in Independence Saturday.
The Raiders scored 112.5 points between eight wrestlers.
Altenhofen and Hayden Wade (120) had the highest finishes for the Raiders, both placing seventh.
BGM Tournament
BROOKLYN — BGM, Iowa Valley and English Valleys were all back in action at BGM High School Saturday, this time in a tournament format.
The third-place matches at 125 and 130 were rematches of Monday night’s dual.
English Valleys’ Anna Gorsh pinned BGM’s Shyla VanNevel in the second period at 125.
Iowa Valley’s Skyler Hoyt pinned English Valleys Christy Knapp at 130 in the first period.
BGM’s Taya Sincox finished second in the 130-pound division.
At 135, Iowa Valley’s Hannah Smolik fell to Oskaloosa’s Mia Luck in the first-place match by fall. BGM’s Cheyleigh Blankenship placed third.
Other top three finishes included Iowa Valley’s Kodie Holcomb at 145 (third), Hawkins at 170 (third) and BGM’s Milliley Mason at 190 (second).
