AMES — Iowa communities have the chance to see themselves through the eyes of first-time visitors by applying for the 2026 First Impressions Tourism and Community Assessment program.
Applications are due by 4 p.m. Feb. 18.
The program, developed by Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Community and Economic Development and offered in partnership with the Iowa Economic Development Authority and the Iowa Tourism Office, helps small towns uncover insights that can grow tourism, attract new residents and improve quality of life.
Five communities will be selected for the 2026 program year.
“This program gives communities an honest look at how they present themselves to visitors,” said Ann Vogelbacher, community and economic development specialist with ISU Extension and Outreach.
“That perspective helps local leaders take concrete steps that make their town more welcoming and better positioned for future growth.”
Each participating community goes through a structured process that includes advance research and unannounced visits by a trained assessment team. Findings are compiled into a comprehensive report with actionable recommendations. The report is then shared in a public forum to spark discussion among residents and local leaders.
Communities with populations of 20,000 or less are eligible to apply. Program information, responsibilities, fees and the application form are available on the First Impressions webpage.
