WILLIAMSBURG -- The Williamsburg Community School District recognized Dr. Rhianna Freiburger, last week for winning The Safe Sports School award from the The National Athletic Trainers’ Association.
“We are one of 17 schools in Iowa to receive it.” Freiburger said. The board thanked Feiburger for her work with Raider athletics.
The board discussed board policy 503.8 concerning student threats of violence. The policy is based on recommendations from the Iowa Association of School Boards and from Superintendent Chad Garber to meet requirements of Iowa House File 604.
This policy makes clear how to discipline a student or students who are threatening violence or acting out violently. Students’ grade levels and the frequency of behavior are taken into account to deliver the appropriate response.
“A student who makes a threat of violence, causes an incident of violence that results in injury or property damage, or who commits an assault, will be subject to escalating levels of discipline for each occurrence,” the policy said.
“When appropriate, referrals will be made to local law enforcement.”
The policy requires that threats of violence by students be reported on by staff and students.
“It’s always good to have direct conversations coming from administration,” said Assistant Principal Michael Jepson. “A lot of this is already in practice.”
The board approved an FFA request for traveling out of state, agreed to more funding for special education, approved the second reading of board policy 704.3 concerning investments, the second reading of board policy 705.1 concerning purchase bidding and the second reading of board policy 507.9 wellness policy.
The board agreed to purchase a 2024 Ford expedition and approved a request for re-admission for a student who had been expelled.
The next Williamsburg School Board meeting will be Nov. 8 at 6:30 p.m. at the Williamsburg Junior-Senior High School.
