There wasn’t much time to rest for the English Valleys softball team last week as they played five games in six days, winning four of those contests to improve their record to 8-5, including a 5-3 conference mark, currently good for a share of third place, one-half game out of second.
HLV
Down 2-1 in Monday’s, June 5, game at North English, the Bears rallied to score three runs in the fourth inning and five more in the fifth to pull away for a 9-2 victory.
EV made the most out of its six hits, getting a two-run homer from Addy Westfall, a pair of two RBI singles from Ada Mews and Kennedy Axmear, a triple from Delaney Hall and RBI base hits from Ava Gehrking and Taylor Mikesell.
Axmear picked up the win inside the circle, scattering five hits with one walk and seven strikeouts.
LYNNVILLE-SULLY
The Bears blanked the Hawks 8-0 Wednesday, June 7, at Sully behind a complete game, three-hit shutout by Axmear, who struck out nine.
Axmear’s teammates provided plenty of offensive help, pounding out 11 hits. Gehrking and Imigyn Stratton each went 3-for-3 at the plate, with Stratton driving in two runs and scoring three times.
Miksell added two hits, including a double, and two RBI, and Shaull and Addison Achenbach singled.
It was EV’s sixth win in a row.
COLFAX-MINGO
That win streak came to end Friday, June 9, as the Tigerhawks invaded North English and beat the Bears, 11-4.
Eight EV errors led to seven unearned runs for Colfax-Mingo, but the Tigerhawks out hit the Bears 10-8, scoring two or more runs in three of the seven innings.
Stratton had a three-hit performance for the second straight night, Hall and Axmear doubled, and Westfall singled to drive in a run.
VINTON TOURNAMENT
English Valleys broke even in a three-team, round-robin tournament Saturday, June 10, at Vinton.
The Bears got out hit 11-5 and committed seven errors in an 11-3 loss to Columbus Catholic.
Axmear had two of EV’s hits, one a double, and Stratton and Aubrey Achenbach delivered RBI singles.
Axmear’s bat and arm did the talking in a 6-1 win over the host Vikings.
In the circle, Axmear limited Vinton to four hits, walked one and struck out five. At bat, she went 3-for-4 with a double, solo home run and two runs scored.
