Bears steal their way to 65-39 win

BELLE PLAINE — Stealing the ball 33 times, the English Valleys Bears kept the Plainsmen on defense, scoring 65 points on the way to a third season win.
Belle Plaine fell to 0-2 in the 65-39 loss at home Friday.
English Valleys led by three after one quarter, 12-9. The Bears increased their lead to 18 by the half, heading to the locker room up 36-18.
Belle Plaine scored nine in the third quarter, bringing its total to 27, while English Valleys scored 27 in the third quarter, to lead 63-27.
The game out of reach for Belle Plaine, English Valleys scored only two in the fourth quarter, for a final of 65-39.
Senior Kennedy Axmear led the scoring for English Valleys, hitting 11 of 17 field goals and 8 of 13 free throws for 30 points.
Senior Delaney Hall went 4-of-12 from the field, and hit two of nine three-pointers for 10 points.
Freshman Addison Achenbach scored seven points, hitting two three-pointers in eight attempts and adding a free throw.
Freshman Gehrking grabbed nine rebounds for English Valleys. Axmear pulled in seven and Imigyn Stratton, a senior, had six.
Gehrking grabbed three steals and blocked one shot. Axmear had three steals, and Stratton grabbed three steals and blocked a shot.
For Belle Plaine, Layne McLeod scored 14 to lead the team’s scoring. The junior was 5-of-11 from the field, hitting three 3-pointers. She was 1-for-4 from the line.
Sophomore Eva Brannaman scored eight for Belle Plaine, hitting three of four field goals including both 3-pointers she attempted.
Senior Alyssa Steinback scored seven for the Plainsmen, going 1-for-2 from beyond the 3-point line and hitting two of four 2-point attempts.
Branneman pulled in five rebounds and had two steals. Ella Grieder had four rebounds and one steal. Lacie Rethman, a sophomore, pulled down four rebounds.
Belle Plaine shot 37% from the field to English Valleys’ 47%. English Valleys hit 50% of its free throws; Belle Plaine hit 46%.
Belle Plaine fell to 0-2. English Valleys was 3-1 after the win.
Belle Plaine lost its first game of the season in Highland Nov. 27, 39-18
Highland led 14-7 at the end of the first quarter, 24-12 at half, 27-16 after 3 quarters.
Senior Ella Grieder led Belle Plaine scoring with 11 points. Grieder went 5-of-11 from the field and hit one three-pointer in four attempts.
Senior Janessa Blomme scored four, and junior Kyla Shaull, 2.
Blomme pulled in six rebounds and had two blocks and two steals.
Shaull grabbed four rebounds, and Grieder, 3. Grieder added two steals.
The Plainsmen shot 19.5% from the field and 50% from the line.
The girls turned the ball over 24 times, and took the ball from Highland 17.
Belle Plaine was called on 11 more founds than Highland, committing 17 to Highland’s 6.
