FORT DODGE — Williamsburg’s Channing Becker and Edie Axmear concluded their seasons competing in the Class 3A girls’ race at the State Cross-Country Championships Friday at the Lakeside Municipal Golf Course.
Class 3A-4A competed on day one of the state meet.
Pella’s Marissa Ferebee blazed the course with a state girls’ record of 16:30. Ferebee would have finished 20th in the boys’ race.
Pella also won the team title in the girls’ race with a historically low team score of 23.
The race was also loaded with tons of WaMaC conference competition. Three of the top six teams compete in that conference.
The freshman Becker placed 38th in her first state experience for the Raiders in a time of 19:45.
Axmear placed 98th in a time of 21:09.
“These two just had incredible seasons,” Williamsburg head coach Nick Nordheim said. “I thought they had good races, but they were obviously hoping for a little bit more. It is a little strange running without your team at the state meet.”
The two Raiders’ underclassmen are some of the fastest underclassmen runners the Raiders have ever had.
“Channing had the best freshman season we've ever seen at Williamsburg, holding the fastest five times in school history for freshmen,” Nordheim said on Becker.
“Edie is our second fastest sophomore of all time having an incredible season as well.”
The state experience will help both attempt to lead the team to state next season.
