BUSSEY — Even without one of their top offensive and defensive players, junior Ty Alcott, Belle Plaine had plenty of weapons to defeat Twin Cedars 60-0 in 8-man football last Friday night at Bussey.
The victory left the Plainsmen with a 4-3 overall record and 2-2 mark in the district, keeping them alive for a postseason berth.
If BGM loses this Friday to District 7 leader Moravia, the Bears, Plainsmen and Montezuma would tie for third place. Only one of them would move on to the state playoffs based on points since they beat each other in head-to-head competition.
As Alcott looked on from the sidelines with a season-ending knee injury suffered the week before in a Homecoming loss to the Braves, Belle Plaine didn’t miss a beat on either side of the ball.
Sophomore Aidan Timm took over for Alcott and threw three touchdown passes, two to Riley Simmons and one to Sam DeMeulenaere.
Timm also ran for a touchdown, but the bulk of the Plainsmen’s 226-yard rushing attack came from junior Lane Voukon, who carried the ball seven times for 127 yards and three TDs.
Sophomore Wade Sankot added 78 yards rushing on 10 touches and one TD.
Sankot also scored two, 2-point conversions. Timm, Voukon and Simmons each had one.
Senior Jax Stamp led Belle Plaine’s shutout on defense with nine solo tackles, eight of those for lost yardage. Senior Jeremy Reineke and sophomore Will Sankot combined for 13 tackles, and Voukon recovered two Saber fumbles.
The Plainsmen will travel to Marengo this Friday for their final game of the regular season against 5-2 Iowa Valley.
