Beyond the tree
Creating cozy spaces this holiday season

The Christmas tree may be the focal point of holiday decorations, but it’s not the only item that evokes the festive feeling of the season.
HGTV suggests that holiday decorators start at the front door, welcoming guests with holiday décor before they ever enter the house.
Create a cozy outdoor area for holiday guests to gather. Repurpose what you already have, or pick up a few new items that express holiday cheer. Hang a handmade wreath on the door.
Then move inside, draping faux or fresh evergreen garland along the mantel. Hang stockings and add a few glass trees.
Drape banisters of staircases with fresh garland, ribbons and bows.
Backyard clippings and brass bells make timeless holiday decorations. Hang them indoors for a farmhouse-chic look or put them on the door in place of a traditional wreath.
Set the table in a “happy hue.” Add some greenery, bows and ribbons to old Bundt or tube cake pans to create holiday centerpieces.
Take advantage of the cold weather — or use your freezer — to turn plastic cartons filled with water into magical ice lanterns for use indoors or out.
For those holiday posts that fill Instagram, The Pioneer Woman magazine suggests a Christmas bow backdrop. Stick green, gold and white bows on a backdrop for selfies or family portraits.
