BROOKLYN — The BGM boys golf team was looking to bounce back after a fourth-place finish at the South Iowa Cedar League meet last week.
Advancing to the district meet will suffice, as the Bears placed second on their home course (Brooklyn-Victor Country Club) in a Class 1A sectional Wednesday.
The top three teams and top two individuals not on a qualifying team advanced to districts Monday.
BGM was led by a seventh-place finish from Beckett Rhoads, who shot a 78 on the par-70.
“My round was good,” Rhoads said. “It was dry which made everything roll down the hills.”
Elevation affects most holes on the course.
BGM golfers were packed tightly; their second- through fifth-best games were within six strokes of Rhoads.
Having a tight bunch of scorers could prove beneficial come Monday.
Top golfer statistically on the season, Ethan Bridgewater, also has the potential to drop a low score and contend at the top.
“We feel pretty good,” Rhoads said of heading into districts. “It’s a tough course, but we should be fine if our guys show up to play.”
The same qualifying criteria for sectionals will be in effect at districts as BGM tries to qualify for state.
Joining BGM at the Wapello district will be two individual qualifiers, HLV-TC’s Peyton Roth and English Valleys’ Gage Heyne.
Roth, coming off a conference individual title, shot an even-par 70, winning by three strokes over-second place Brennan McGuire of Keota.
“I was hitting my driver really well and striking my irons,” Roth said of his round. “Struggled a little on the greens early, but once I got that figured my games was smooth and consistent.”
Roth birdied a total of three holes and now has his sights on qualifying for state in his senior season.
Roth hopes growth on the mental side of the game will help him heading into Monday.
“My swing feels good,” Roth said. “I just know I’m going to have to make minimal errors.”
Heyne finished fifth with a 76 and may have had the shot of the day.
On the 297-yard hole four, Heyne hit his drive on the green and a had a close putt for an eagle look.
