BROOKLYN — Fans watched the Sadie Klein show in the first half and a complete team performance from BGM in the second half Thursday night in Brooklyn.
Klein scored 14 of her game-high 17 points in the first half, and BGM outscored HLV-TC 25-7 in the second half for a 46-29 win in a Class 1A Region 8 girls basketball first round matchup.
“I’ve just trusted all the hard work I’ve put in,” Klein said. “My team and I were just vibing. Our student section was amazing tonight, and the energy was great.”
Klein erupted, scoring seven of BGM’s first eight points of the second quarter after the Bears led 10-8 at the end of quarter one.
A Klein three gave the Bears an 18-9 lead.
HLV-TC responded right away, closing the quarter strong on a 13-3 run.
Brenna Hawkins, Emery Hall and Erilea Kupka all had threes for the Warriors in the run. Kupka’s came in the final 10 seconds to give HLV-TC a 22-21 halftime lead.
It was all BGM after that, right from the jump in the third quarter.
“We just had to keep playing, trust each other and play as a team,” Klein said on the second half.
Emersyn Minnaert began the third with a three-pointer as the Bears held the Warriors to just four points in the third.
“We did better talking on defense and knew a lot of their actions, having played them before,” Klein said.
Leading 33-26 heading into the final quarter, the Bears continued to stretch their lead as their defense limited the Warriors.
Ellie English scored eight of her 14 points for BGM in the final period as the lead got as high as 19.
A Hawkins basket for HLV-TC put the score at its final, 46-29.
The Warriors connected on just three field goals in the second half.
“They followed the game plan perfectly tonight, especially on defense,” BGM coach Andrew Albers said. “They have a good point guard and shooter and our plan was to take away the drive and the easy looks.”
Hall led the Warriors with 10 points, Bryndal Jack followed with six.
HLV-TC finishes their season with a record of 7-15.
The win gave BGM their ninth of the season, and an advancement to the second round to face top-seed and eighth ranked Gladbrook-Reinbeck (18-3) Tuesday.
“It’s great for the kids,” Albers said on the win. “They have worked hard all season and been very coachable.”
