BROOKLYN — Only one team in the South Iowa Cedar League last season finished in the top two in both the boys and girls conference golf meets. That team is BGM.
The BGM girls won the conference by 19 strokes with a score of 446, thanks to the team’s top four finishers.
The Bears are primed to repeat; they return their top five scorers from that meet.
Aurelia Roudabush tied for second last season, and Averee Krebill finished in the top 10.
Ana Coleman, Shaye Strong and Macey Heishman round out the team’s top five returners.
“Our goal is to repeat as conference champions and advance to the state golf tournament,” BGM coach Jerod Burns said.
Qualifying for state as a team in golf is difficult. Teams have to advance through two rounds of postseason regionals.
On the boys’ side, the Bears return four of their top six scorers from last season’s conference meet.
The team was just three strokes off first place Sigourney, which scored 336.
Ethan Bridgewater finished tied for fourth. Beau Burns, Beckett Rhoads and Jax Foster are the team’s other returning starters.
The goals for the boys team will be the same as the girls, Burns said.
The boys side also has two rounds of postseason play to advance to state, sectionals and districts.
Both teams made it to the state qualifying round last season.
Golf practices officially started Monday, and the Bears will open their season at home with a co-ed triangular meet April 7 at the Brooklyn Country Club.
