FAIRFIELD — Big play, after big play, after big play, after big play.
Williamsburg scored four touchdowns of 52 yards or longer in the first half, including back-to-back interception returns, and cruised to a 56-14 victory at Fairfield last Friday night.
The win improved the Raiders’ record to 6-0 overall and 2-0 in the district, setting up a showdown this week between the state’s top-ranked team in Class 3A and No. 7 Solon (5-1, 2-0) at Solon.
Williamsburg didn’t waste any time getting on the board against the Trojans, finding the end zone less than four minutes into the game on a 16-yard pass from Kellen Cockrell to Derek Weisskopf.
The next time the Raiders had the ball, Weisskopf, taking over at quarterback for Cockrell who sprained his ankle, hooked up with Braylon Wetjen for a 63-yard touchdown pass.
Williamsburg’s defense then forced back-to-back turnovers that resulted in touchdowns. Both Fairfield miscues were pick-six interception returns to close out a 28-0 first quarter Raider surge.
Weisskopf collected the first interception, returning it 75 yards for a touchdown, and Wetjen, 60 seconds later, followed with a 52-yard pick six.
A Williamsburg turnover midway through the second quarter provided Fairfield with its first points of the night, but the Trojans returned the favor a couple minutes later when they fumbled, and Anthony Fenton returned it one yard for a Raider TD.
Williamsburg put the finishing touches on a 42-6 first half on a 77-yard TD run by Nile Sinn. Logan Rethwisch added his sixth PAT kick.
The Raiders tacked on 14 more points in the third period on a pair of Weisskopf touchdown passes — 35 yards to Rayce Heitman and 9 yards to Caleb Welsh.
Colby McMullin made both PAT kicks.
Williamsburg totaled 359 yards of offense, including 143 yards rushing by Sinn on 11 carries, and 153 yards passing by Weisskopf, who was 7-for-12 with three TDs and one interception.
The Raider defense held the Trojans to 101 total yards and, once again, were led by middle linebacker Heitman, who had 8.5 tackles, seven of those solos and 1.5 for lost yards.
