Boys and Girls SICL Conference track meet held in Brooklyn

On beautiful, but windy, day at BGM High School last Tuesday several area schools competed in the SICL Conference track and field showcase. The Lynnville-Sully boy’s and girl’s teams both finished in the top spot in relatively comfortable fashion.
The Belle Plaine boys finished second well behind Lynnville, but comfortably ahead of Iowa Valley and North Mahaska who tied for third. English Valley finished sixth, and HLV ninth on the boy’s side.
North Mahaska and Montezuma landed second and third behind Lynnville for the girls. English Valley was the top finisher in the Current footprint at fifth, followed by HLV in seventh, Iowa Valley eighth and Belle Plaine in eleventh place.
English Valley girls
Delaney Hall, Anna Gorsh, Libby Armstrong and Kayli Mohror sprinted to a first place time of 54.34 seconds in the 4 x 100 relay. The same crew came back for an encore in the 4 x 200 and finished in second place, only 1.46 seconds behind the winners from Lynnville-Sully.
Kennedy Axmear followed up her fifth place Drake Relays performance with a winning discus throw of 120 ft 1 inch. Axmear placed sixth in the shot put.
HLV girls
Standout sophomore Ema Roberts had another outstanding day. Roberts took the title in the high jump with a winning jump of 5 foot even. Roberts then moved out of the infield and on to the track where she took first in the 200 meter dash and first in the 400 meter dash. Her third place finish in the 100 meter was one tenth of a second behind second and four tenths out of first place.
Iowa Valley girls
Lydia Kriegel put up some big points for the Tigers in the throwing events. Kriegel posted a winning throw of 35 ft 7.25 inches in the shot put, besting the runner up by over two feet. Her discus toss of 107 ft 1 inch was good enough for second behind recent Drake Relays participant Kennedy Axmear of English Valleys.
On the oval, the team of Grace Ryan, Michaela Schachtile, Abby Sparrowgrove and Ella Read claimed the third spot in the 4 x 800 relay with a time of 11 minutes 36.6 seconds.
Belle Plaine girls
Alyssa Steinback paced the Plainsmen taking fourth in the 400 dash, fourth in the 100 meter hurdles and fourth again in the 400 hurdles. She also helped her team of Ella Grieder, Kyla Shaull and Mandy Chizek to a third place finish in the shuttle hurdle relay.
Belle Plaine boys
Several Plainsmen teams brought home wins. Sam DeMeulenaere is the conference champ in the 800 meter run in a time of 2:03.37. Lane Vokoun capture gold with a long jump of 18 ft 11 inches. Riley Simmons 121 ft discus toss gave him a first place finish. The distance medley team of Rhett Parrott, Tim Connor, Lucas Eichhorn and Same DeMeulenaere posted a 3:49.95 for the win. Rounding out the champions list was Ty Alcott, Aidan Timm, Lane Vokoun and Connor Timm brought home the prize in the 4 x 110 hurdles in a 1:06 time.
Iowa Valley Boys
The sprinters came to play for the conference meet. Lead by the fastest duo on the track, Evan Kearney edged teammate Clayton Kinzenbaw by less than two tenths of a second (11.23 to 11.41) to go 1-2 in the final 100 meter dash standings. Kearney then went on to win the 200 in a time 22.39 seconds.
Kearney and Kinzenbaw teamed up with Pierce Kientz and Caleb Haack to beat the field in the 4 x 100 relay in a time of 44.92 seconds. This speedy quad also won the 4 x 200 in 1:34.24.
English Valleys boys
Gage Heyne held on to win the 1600 meter run with a time 4 minutes 52.06 seconds, exactly three one hundredths of a second ahead of North Mahaska’s Brayden Veiseth. Heyne then went on to grab the 3200 meter title in a much more comfortable thirty-one second margin of victory, finishing in 10:38.5.
Myles Grove took second in the 800 with a time of 2:06.5.
HLV Boys
Brody Sternhagen sprinted his way to three, third place individual finishes on the day. He posted a 100 meter time of 11.56, 23.22 in the 200 and 52.39 in the 400. He wrapped up his day by anchoring the sprint medley team of Tyler Ballard, Landyn Ankrum and Hunter Bazyn. They finished sixth with a time of 1:46.38
