MONTEZUMA — Qualifying for state in eight events is a pretty good way to end the season.
The Montezuma boys track and field team did exactly that last year, and the feat creates a lot of excitement heading into this season.
“Taking eight events up to the blue oval is a pretty cool thing and will always be special,” Montezuma coach John Beck said.
”Along with that, we were able to make some improvements as a team at meets. We had our best finish at the South Iowa Cedar League meet in roughly 10 years.“
The Braves return several key members from last year’s state team but have graduated a couple of key individuals.
The team took home a fifth-place medal in the shuttle hurdle relay and return three members of that quartet this season in Damien Knox, Broox Stockman and Luke Brennan.
Knox also qualified in the long jump and the 110-meter high hurdles, bringing a lot of versatility to the Braves.
Stockman also ran on the team’s qualifying 4x100 relay, which also returns David Rose.
“We got some key experience from some of our returning guys, and they are itching to get going again,” said Beck.
Some exciting newcomers join this year’s team. Junior Brady Boulton is the standout.
Boulton’s speed and athleticism has been on full display during football and basketball season; Boulton was one of the most productive players in the state.
“As with any season we have high hopes for what we can accomplish,” Beck said. “We have a lot of competitive meets, and the goal throughout the year is to see consistent improvement to put ourselves in a position to compete at the conference and the district meet.”
“We have a group of 23 young men, and I have liked what I have seen so far. They are working hard and being great teammates. Those two things will go a long way.”
The Braves open up their outdoor season April 1 at East Marshall.
