Montezuma 61, Winfield Mt. Union 54
MONTEZUMA — The Montezuma football team held off Winfield Mt. Union in the first round of the 8-player playoffs Friday night.
The Braves had the halftime lead at 28-26, and a 27-point third quarter gave them just enough cushion to hold on for the win.
The offense for the Braves totaled 63 carries for 294 rushing yards and seven touchdowns.
Broox Stockman led the rushing attack with 116 yards, and Brett Plants (98) and Brady Boulton (96) were right behind.
Boulton threw for 149 yards and returned a kickoff for a touchdown.
The Braves (9-1) will host ranked Bedford (8-1) Friday night. Bedford plays a similar style of ground-and-pound, physical football.
Bedford 18, Belle Plaine 12
BELLE PLAINE — For the 16 teams that hosted a first-round playoff game in 8-player, the Plainsmen had the toughest challenge, welcoming ranked Bedford.
The Bulldogs made it all the way to last year’s state finals.
The Plainsmen gave the Bulldogs a heck of a fight, falling short 18-12 after leading until the final minutes.
Ty Alcott rushed for a score and threw a touchdown to Lane Vokoun to give the Plainsmen a 12-3 lead in the first half.
The Bulldogs scored right before half to shrink the lead to 12-10.
The physical, defensive battle continued throughout the second half, but on their last drive of the game, the Bulldogs’ offense reached the end zone for the 18-12 lead.
The Plainsmen conclude their season at 7-2.
Edgewood-Colesburg 92, BGM 56
EDGEWOOD — The points were in bunches as BGM’s season came to a close Friday night. BGM fell to Edgewood-Colesburg in the opening round of the 8-player playoffs.
The Vikings pulled away with a 40-point second quarter.
Beau Burns threw for 455 yards and two touchdowns for the Bears, finishing his season with 59 total touchdowns.
Three different Bears’ receivers had more than 100 yards in the game. Dakota Heishman led with 139.
The Bears conclude the season with a 4-5 record.
