MONTEZUMA — The Montezuma girls’ basketball team had one loss in conference play heading into a rematch against Class 2A No. 2 North Mahaska Friday night.
That one loss came to the Warhawks in the season opener.
The Bravettes topped the Warhawks Friday, 53-45, and now they are tied atop the South Iowa Cedar League West.
The big win also shows what the 1A No. 7 Bravettes are capable of when they are hitting shots. The Bravettes hit 12 of 24 from deep.
Half of those came from Claire Erselius, who was a remarkable six-of-eight from three-point range.
Vivian Cook is second in 1A in total threes this season, with 48 after Friday.
The win puts the Bravettes at 11-4, with six regular season games remaining.
The stakes were also high in the boys’ game, but the Warhawks came out on top 59-56.
Brady Boulton had 22 for the Braves, who are now 13-2.
Roth closing in on 1,000
HLV-TC’s Peyton Roth had 955 career points after Friday night’s game against Lynnville-Sully, inching closer to the 1,000-point mark.
The Warriors’ senior is averaging just over 20 a game, so Roth has the chance to accomplish the feat in next week’s games.
The Warriors have seven regular season games remaining.
With three more wins this season, the Warriors can achieve their second 10-win season since 2012.
Wetjen hits game-winner
VAN HORNE— Off a sideline out-of-bounds play, Williamsburg’s Grady Wetjen delivered with a game-winning three for the Raiders boys’ basketball team Tuesday.
The buzzer-beater gave the Raiders a 53-50 conference win over Benton Community. Wetjen scored 20 in the win.
Cadden puts up huge double-double
BROOKLYN— BGM’s Ben Cadden posted a 16-point, 21-rebound double-double in Friday’s win over Colfax-Mingo.
Of the 21 rebounds, 11 came on the offensive side.
Cadden leads the Bears in scoring on the season.
